Chefchaouen, the famous blue-painted mountain town, is the best day trip from Tangier — about two hours south through the Rif. Strong alternatives are nearby walled Asilah on the coast, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, and Cap Spartel with the Caves of Hercules right on Tangier’s doorstep.

If you can only do one day trip from Tangier, make it Chefchaouen. The blue-washed mountain town is one of the most photographed places in Morocco for good reason — every lane, doorway, and staircase is painted in shades of cobalt and powder blue, climbing up the Rif hillside. It is roughly a two-hour drive south, which makes it an ambitious but very doable day trip, and the medina is small, walkable, and far gentler than the big cities. For most Tangier visitors it is the clear highlight of the region.

I will be honest that Chefchaouen as a day trip is a slight rush — the magic of the place is partly in lingering, watching the light change on the blue walls and eating a slow lunch on a terrace, and a day trip clips that short. If you have the flexibility, an overnight is better. But if your time is fixed in Tangier, a long day still delivers the blue lanes, the Place Outa el Hammam square below the kasbah, and the viewpoint hike up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset over the town.

The easy, low-effort alternative is Asilah, just 45 minutes down the Atlantic coast. It is a small walled town with whitewashed ramparts, an artsy mural-covered medina, calm beaches, and almost no hassle — a relaxed half- or full-day that pairs beach and culture without the long drive. For history buffs, Volubilis and Meknes make a bigger day to the south, putting you among the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco with their mosaics still in the ground, though it is a longer haul.

And do not overlook what is right on the doorstep. Cap Spartel — where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet — and the adjacent Caves of Hercules are barely 20 minutes from the city, making them a perfect half-day if you would rather not spend hours in a car. My honest ranking: Chefchaouen if you want the showstopper and do not mind the drive, Asilah for an easy charming day, Cap Spartel for a quick coastal half-day, and Volubilis for the Roman history. All four are genuinely worthwhile.
