A camel trek is the classic, atmospheric way in — slow, scenic, about 1–1.5 hours to camp at sunset, but it can be uncomfortable for some. A 4x4 is faster, easier on your back, and better for families or anyone with mobility concerns. Many trips do camel one way, 4x4 the other.

Both get you into the dunes; they just offer different experiences. The camel trek is the iconic image of the Sahara — a slow, swaying caravan crossing the sand at golden hour, usually taking around an hour to an hour and a half to reach camp. It's deeply atmospheric and photogenic, and for many people the camel ride is a bucket-list moment in itself.

The honest downside of camels is comfort. The saddles are firm, the motion takes getting used to, and after an hour or more some people find it sore on the hips, knees, and lower back. It's also not ideal if you have significant mobility issues, back problems, or are travelling with very young children. It's an experience, not a luxury ride.

The 4x4 is the practical alternative: quick, smooth enough, and it drops you near camp in a fraction of the time with none of the physical strain. It's the better choice for families with small kids, older travellers, anyone with back or joint concerns, or simply people who'd rather conserve energy for the dunes themselves. You still get the full camp experience once you arrive.

Our usual recommendation is to do both: take the camel trek into camp at sunset for the magic, then return by 4x4 in the morning (or vice versa). That way you get the postcard experience without committing to two long camel rides. If you can only pick one and comfort matters to you, the 4x4 is the sensible call; if atmosphere is everything and you're up for it, the camel wins.
