From San José, connect via Madrid (often through Panama or a US hub), then 1.5–2h on to Casablanca or Marrakech — total 18–24 hours. Plan 8–12 days: Marrakech, the Sahara, Fes. Costa Rican passport holders need a Morocco visa, so apply with plenty of lead time.
San José doesn't have a nonstop to Morocco, so every itinerary I plan from Costa Rica routes through a hub. The most dependable path goes via Madrid: San José connects (frequently through Panama City on Copa, or a US gateway) to Madrid, and from there Morocco is a short 90-minute to two-hour hop to Casablanca or Marrakech. Lisbon is a fine alternative entry point. Total travel time tends to land between 18 and 24 hours, so reconfirm each connection and leave reasonable layover margins.
Because Morocco is a long way from Central America, I encourage Tico travellers to plan nine to twelve days. A loop that consistently delights: land in Marrakech, head into the High Atlas and onward to the Sahara for a desert night, then north to Fes for the great medieval medina before flying home. If you have the full twelve days, add Chefchaouen's blue alleys or a coastal breather in Essaouira, which contrasts nicely with the inland warmth.
Costa Rican citizens require a visa to enter Morocco, so build the application into your timeline early. Expect to provide a passport valid six-plus months, confirmed hotels, a return or onward ticket, and proof of funds. Apply through the Moroccan consular channel that handles Costa Rica and carry printed copies of everything. As always, hold off on non-refundable bookings until your visa is in hand.
A couple of final pointers. Morocco runs six to seven hours ahead of Costa Rica, so the time shift is significant — keep your first day light. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) bring the most pleasant weather for the whole route. Use a fee-free international card and pull dirhams from an ATM after you arrive. Pre-book your arrival nights and the desert experience; keep the cities open to wander.
