Like July — coast yes, desert no. August is peak heat inland (Marrakech 38–40°C, Sahara 45°C+) but the Atlantic coast stays a perfect 24–27°C and is lively with festivals. Ideal for Essaouira, Agadir and the Atlas; avoid daytime desert and city sightseeing.

August is the hottest, busiest summer month, and the inland heat is at its peak. Marrakech and Fes sit around 38–40°C, sometimes higher, and the Sahara is at its most extreme — well over 45°C by day. For most travellers, this rules out the classic city-plus-desert grand tour in its usual form. But August can still be a fantastic month if you let the coast and mountains lead.

The Atlantic coast is in full swing. Essaouira stays cool and windswept at 24–27°C and hosts a packed calendar of summer festivals and beach life; Agadir delivers dependable resort sunshine; and the northern coast around Tangier, Asilah and the Mediterranean beaches near Al Hoceima is at its liveliest. This is when Moroccan families themselves holiday by the sea, so the coast is festive, social and reliably comfortable.

The High Atlas remains a wonderful cool-weather escape. Mountain trekking around Imlil, Toubkal and the Ait Bouguemez valley is excellent — fresh days, cool nights and dramatic green-and-rock scenery while the plains swelter far below. Combining the coast with a few mountain days is the smart August strategy, keeping you comfortable throughout.

The Sahara in August is for the heat-hardened only, and even then strictly at dawn and dusk with a shaded luxury camp, careful hydration and absolutely no midday exposure. Frankly, we usually steer August travellers away from the deep desert and toward spring or autumn for that experience. Cities like Marrakech are best enjoyed in the cool of early morning and after sunset, when rooftop terraces and gardens come alive.

Verdict: August is a coast-and-mountains month, lively and warm, ideal for beach holidays and high-altitude trekking. It is the wrong month for the daytime desert and for marathon city sightseeing — plan around the heat and the European peak-season crowds and you will have a great time.
