Both work if you match the region to the season. In summer, head for the cool Atlantic coast or the Atlas mountains and avoid the baking interior and desert. In winter, the cities and coast are mild and quiet, while the mountains see snow and desert nights turn cold — so pack layers.
Neither summer nor winter is off-limits in Morocco — the trick is going to the right part of the country at the right time. The mistake is treating Morocco as one climate; in reality the coast, the cities, the mountains and the desert behave very differently from one another in the same month, and a smart seasonal plan plays to each region's strengths.
In summer (June to August), the golden rule is to follow the cool air. The Atlantic coast — Essaouira, Agadir, the beaches around them — stays breezy and mild thanks to the sea, even when the interior is roasting. The High Atlas mountains are the other refuge, where altitude keeps days pleasant and nights cool, making summer prime hiking season up there. What you want to avoid in summer is the inland cities at midday and, above all, the Sahara, where the heat becomes genuinely punishing.
Winter (December to February) is quietly one of the nicest times to visit the cities and coast. Marrakech, Fes and Rabat enjoy mild, sunny days, far fewer crowds, and lovely low light for photography, though evenings get chilly. The Atlas mountains turn properly wintry — there's skiing at Oukaïmeden — and passes can occasionally close after snow. The desert is doable and beautiful by day, but nights drop towards freezing, so a winter Sahara trip means real cold-weather kit.
There are some seasonal bonuses worth knowing. Winter often brings the best value, with lower prices and easier availability outside the Christmas and New Year peak. Summer, while hot, is when the coastal towns are at their liveliest and most festive. And in both seasons you sidestep the spring and autumn crowds that fill the most popular sights and riads — a real plus if you prefer space and quiet.
So: is Morocco good in summer or winter? Yes to both, with planning. Build a summer trip around the coast and mountains and treat the desert with caution; build a winter trip around the cities and coast, and embrace — with the right clothing — the crisp magic of the mountains and dunes. Go in with the season in mind and either can be a wonderful, and often quieter and cheaper, time to travel.
