It is a fun novelty rather than a world-class resort. Oukaïmeden, about 1.5 hours from Marrakech, is Africa's highest ski area (up to ~3,200m) and runs roughly January to March in a good snow year. Limited lifts, basic facilities, rentable gear — but skiing with the Sahara on the horizon is unforgettable.
Let me be honest up front, because this is a question where managing expectations matters: skiing at Oukaïmeden is a wonderful novelty and a great story, but it is not the Alps. What it absolutely is, though, is one of the few places on earth where you can ski in the morning and be in a palm-fringed medina by dinner — Oukaïmeden ("Ouka" to locals) sits about 90 minutes up from Marrakech in the High Atlas, is the highest ski resort in Africa, and tops out around 3,200 metres. On a clear day the views are jaw-dropping, with the Atlas rolling away toward the haze of the desert.
The skiing itself is modest. There are a handful of runs served by a couple of lifts (including a long, slightly rickety chairlift to the top and a scatter of drag lifts), suited mostly to beginners and intermediates, plus some lovely off-piste and ski-touring for the adventurous when snow is good. You can rent skis, boots and a jacket on the spot from local guys at the base — the gear is well-worn but functional — and hire an instructor cheaply. It is cheerful, chaotic and very Moroccan: think mint tea between runs and donkeys carrying equipment alongside the lifts.
The big caveat is snow reliability. The season is short and fickle — roughly January to March — and depends entirely on the year. In a good winter you get proper cover and excellent days; in a dry year there may be barely enough to ski, or the lifts may not all run. So I never sell Oukaïmeden as a guaranteed ski trip; I treat it as a fun add-on you commit to once we can see the snow report, with a backup plan for a snow-shoe walk or a scenic mountain day if the cover is thin.
Even when the snow is patchy, going up to Ouka is a delightful day. The drive through the Ourika valley is gorgeous, the high-altitude village is atmospheric, and just standing in snow with the African plains stretching below is the kind of "I cannot believe I am doing this" moment that makes a trip. Many guests who are not even skiers go up just to play in the snow, sledge, and have lunch with a view. Bring warm layers and sunglasses — the high-altitude sun is fierce off the snow.
So, worth it? If you are a serious skier chasing world-class pistes, no — go to the Alps. But if you want a quirky half-day adventure, a brilliant photo, and the bragging rights of having skied in Africa with the Sahara on the horizon, absolutely yes. I will time it for the snow, sort gear and an instructor, and pair it with the beauty of the Ourika valley so the day delivers regardless of the conditions.
