Overview

3 days, Imlil to Aroumd

Mount Toubkal (Jbel Toubkal) is the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167m, climbed from the Imlil trailhead (1,740m) about 90 minutes south of Marrakech. This active 3-day itinerary follows the classic route: a steady ascent up the Mizane valley past Sidi Chamharouch to the Toubkal Refuge at around 3,207m, a pre-dawn summit push for sunrise on the roof of North Africa, and a long descent followed by a gentle final valley day before returning to Marrakech.

Suitability

Is this 3-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around a balanced pace that pairs full days of sightseeing with genuine downtime to wander on your own. These are active days with hiking, dune-walking and uneven terrain, so good mobility and a sense of adventure will serve you well. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

Day 1: Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) — Toubkal Refuge
Toubkal Refuge

Day 1

Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)

Toubkal Refuge · 11 km · 90 minutes Marrakech to Imlil drive

Your summit bid begins with the classic approach from Imlil. After the drive from Marrakech and a briefing with your guide, trek up the Mizane valley past Aroumd and the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, climbing steadily on rocky mule paths to the Toubkal Refuge at around 3,207m. It is a demanding but rewarding first day - roughly 1,460m of ascent over about 11km - that leaves you poised beneath the peak, acclimatising for tomorrow's pre-dawn start.

Morning

3-4 hours

Transfer to Imlil & Begin the Ascent

Drive about 64km / 90 minutes from Marrakech to Imlil (1,740m). Meet your guide and mules, then set off up the valley through Aroumd, following the Mizane river deeper into the mountains as the peaks close in around you.

Afternoon

3-4 hours

Sidi Chamharouch to the Refuge

Pass the pilgrimage village of Sidi Chamharouch (2,300m) and climb the long, steady switchbacks above it. The trail gains height relentlessly to the Toubkal Refuge (~3,207m), where you settle in, rest your legs and acclimatise as the air grows thin and cold.

Evening

2 hours

Refuge Dinner & Early Night

Eat a hearty carbohydrate-rich dinner at the refuge and prepare your kit and headtorch for the summit. With an early start ahead, most trekkers are in their bunks soon after dark, listening to the wind on the high mountain walls.

Day 2: Pre-Dawn Summit of Toubkal (4,167m) & Descent to Imlil — Imlil
Imlil

Day 2

Pre-Dawn Summit of Toubkal (4,167m) & Descent to Imlil

Imlil · 16 km · Trekking day - no road transfer drive

This is the big day. Setting off by headtorch in the cold dark, you climb the scree and rock above the refuge to gain the summit of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m) - the roof of North Africa - ideally in time for a breathtaking sunrise over endless ridgelines. After photos and a careful descent back to the refuge for breakfast, you continue all the way down the valley to a comfortable gîte in Imlil, trading the high mountains for walnut groves and a hot shower.

Morning

5-7 hours round trip

Summit Push to Jbel Toubkal (4,167m)

Begin before dawn for the steep climb up the southern cwm, switchbacking over scree and boulders to the summit ridge. Reaching the metal pyramid marker at 4,167m, take in staggering views across the High Atlas and, on clear days, toward the distant Sahara, before carefully descending to the refuge.

Afternoon

3-4 hours

Descend the Mizane Valley to Imlil

After breakfast and a rest at the refuge, trek back down past Sidi Chamharouch and Aroumd to Imlil. The long descent is easier on the lungs but tough on the knees, with the valley greening and warming with every step you lose in altitude.

Evening

2-3 hours

Celebration Dinner in Imlil

Arrive at a welcoming gîte in Imlil to wash off two days of mountain dust. Toast your summit over a generous tagine and mint tea, swapping stories of the climb as the peaks you stood on fade into the dusk above the village.

Meals

  • BreakfastIncluded · Early breakfast at the Toubkal Refuge
  • LunchIncluded · Trail lunch on the descent
  • DinnerIncluded · Celebration tagine at your Imlil gîte

Travel note · Summit day is long and cold before dawn, then bright and exposed - layer up and protect against the sun. In winter and early spring the upper slopes hold snow and ice, requiring crampons, an ice axe and mountaineering experience.

Imlil

Day 3

Gentle Valley Walk & Return to Marrakech

Imlil · 6 km · 90 minutes Imlil to Marrakech drive

Ease your legs back to earth on a relaxed final morning around Imlil. A short, gentle walk to the village's waterfalls or up to a viewpoint above the walnut terraces lets you enjoy the High Atlas at a slower pace, far from yesterday's effort. After a last mint tea with your hosts, transfer back to Marrakech, returning to the city's colour and bustle with the summit of North Africa behind you.

Morning

2-3 hours

Imlil Waterfalls & Village Stroll

Take an easy walk to the Imlil waterfalls or up through the terraced fields above the village, with gentle views of the surrounding peaks. It is a low-effort, restorative morning - a chance to soak up Berber village life and stretch tired summit-day muscles.

Afternoon

90 minutes

Return Transfer to Marrakech

Enjoy a final lunch in the mountains, then drive back down the winding road to Marrakech (about 90 minutes), arriving in the afternoon. Reconnect with the medina's energy, or continue your Moroccan journey toward the desert or coast.

3-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

How high is Mount Toubkal?

Mount Toubkal, or Jbel Toubkal, rises to 4,167m, making it the highest peak in North Africa and in the Arab world west of the Nile. It dominates Toubkal National Park in Morocco's High Atlas mountains and is climbed from the village of Imlil at about 1,740m, usually via an overnight at the Toubkal Refuge around 3,207m.

How hard is the Toubkal trek?

Climbing Toubkal is a strenuous high-altitude trek rather than a technical climb in summer. You walk on rocky paths and steep scree, gain over 2,400m in total and reach 4,167m, where the thin air makes the going tough. No climbing skills are needed in good summer conditions, but you should be fit, prepared for long days and comfortable on uneven ground.

How many days do you need to climb Toubkal?

The peak is most commonly climbed over 2 or 3 days. A 2-day trip goes up to the refuge on day one and summits and descends on day two. A 3-day itinerary adds a gentler final valley day for recovery and a more relaxed return to Marrakech, which also helps with acclimatisation and makes the experience less rushed.

Where do you sleep when climbing Toubkal?

You spend a night at the Toubkal Refuge (Refuge du Toubkal / Les Mouflons and the neighbouring CAF refuge) at around 3,207m, below the summit. These are simple, shared mountain huts offering dormitory bunks, hot meals and basic facilities. On a 3-day trip you also spend a night in a comfortable gîte or guesthouse in Imlil.

Do you need a guide and crampons for Toubkal?

A qualified local mountain guide is required in Toubkal National Park and is essential for safety and navigation. In summer no special equipment is needed beyond good boots. From around November to April, however, the upper mountain holds snow and ice, and crampons, an ice axe and winter mountaineering experience become necessary for a safe ascent.

When is the best time to climb Toubkal?

The main trekking season is roughly April to October, when the route is usually snow-free and accessible to fit walkers with a guide. Late spring and autumn offer the most stable, comfortable conditions. Winter ascents from November to April are possible but require crampons, an ice axe and proper mountaineering skills due to snow and ice.

How long is summit day on Toubkal?

Summit day is the toughest, typically starting before dawn by headtorch. The climb from the refuge to the 4,167m summit and back usually takes around 5 to 7 hours round trip, gaining roughly 1,000m on steep scree and rock. On a 3-day trip you then continue down the valley toward Imlil, making it a long but unforgettable day.

Do you need to acclimatise for Toubkal?

Spending a night at the Toubkal Refuge around 3,207m before the summit helps your body adjust to the altitude and reduces the risk of altitude sickness. Climbing slowly, staying well hydrated and eating plenty all help. Travellers who go straight from low elevation to the 4,167m summit too quickly are more likely to suffer headaches and nausea.

How fit do you need to be to climb Toubkal?

You should be in good general fitness and comfortable walking 5 to 8 hours a day over rough, steep terrain on consecutive days, carrying a light daypack while mules take the main load. Regular hiking, cardio and some hill training beforehand make a big difference, especially for the long, steep summit morning at altitude.

What is the Toubkal Refuge like?

The Toubkal Refuge is a basic but welcoming mountain hut at about 3,207m, with shared dormitory bunks, communal dining and simple washing facilities. Half-board meals such as soup, tagine and breakfast are provided. It can be busy and cold at night, so a sleeping-bag liner, warm layers, earplugs and a headtorch are well worth packing.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • A qualified mountain guide is required and essential for a safe Toubkal summit.
  • Spend the night at the refuge to acclimatise; never rush straight to altitude.
  • From November to April the summit needs crampons, an ice axe and winter skills.
  • Train beforehand - expect a long day with around 1,000m of ascent on summit morning.
  • Drink 3-4 litres of water a day and eat well to fend off altitude headaches.
  • Pack a warm down layer, gloves and a hat; pre-dawn temperatures fall below freezing.
  • Bring a sleeping-bag liner, earplugs and a headtorch for the shared refuge.
  • Tip your guide and muleteer fairly at the end of the trek.

Packing list

What to pack

  • Sturdy, broken-in mountain boots with good grip
  • A warm insulated/down jacket plus fleece mid-layers
  • Windproof and waterproof shell jacket and trousers
  • Warm hat, gloves and a buff, plus a sun hat and sunglasses
  • A sleeping-bag liner for the refuge
  • A headtorch with spare batteries for the dawn start
  • Trekking poles to spare your knees on the long descent
  • High-factor sunscreen, lip balm and a personal first-aid kit
  • A 2-3 litre water capacity and electrolyte tablets
  • Cash in small notes for the refuge, tips and trail stops
