Spring (March–May) is arguably the best all-round season: warm, comfortable days of 24–30°C, mild nights, and long golden light. The main caveat is the occasional sandstorm as winds pick up in late spring. It is peak season for good reason, so book ahead.
If someone asks me for the single best window for a first Sahara trip, spring is usually my answer, and March into early May is when I run the most journeys. The temperatures sit in a beautiful sweet spot — daytime highs of roughly 24 to 30°C, warm enough for shorts and a swim but not the punishing heat of summer, and nights that are mild rather than the deep cold of winter. You can climb dunes at midday and still sit out comfortably after dark with just a light layer.
The light in spring is gorgeous. The harsh haze of summer has not arrived, the sun arcs high enough for full warm days, and golden hour stretches long and soft across the dunes — it is no accident that this is when many of my photography guests choose to come. The desert also feels alive after the cooler months; you will see more activity in the oasis villages along the route, and the palmeries between Ouarzazate and the dunes are at their greenest.
The honest caveat is wind. Late spring is when the seasonal winds can stir, and that occasionally means a sandstorm — a day or half-day where visibility drops, fine sand gets into everything, and the camel trek may be paused for safety. It is not common enough to avoid the season, but it is real, so I tell spring guests to pack a scarf to cover the face and a phone case, and to keep their plans flexible by a few hours. A good camp simply hunkers down and waits it out, and the cleared sky afterward is often spectacular.
My candid advice: spring is the season I would book for most people, but precisely because it is so good it is peak — the best camps and private guides fill up, and prices reflect demand, so reserve early. A 3-day Merzouga route in April is close to the ideal Sahara experience: comfortable, luminous, and unforgettable, with only the small gamble of a windy afternoon.
