The Musée Yves Saint Laurent is a striking modern museum dedicated to the designer, right next to the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech. It houses a rotating selection of his haute couture, plus a temporary exhibition hall, library, café, and auditorium. For fashion lovers it's a must; for others, it's a beautiful but optional 45-minute stop.
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum opened in 2017 and sits directly beside the Jardin Majorelle, which Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé famously bought and saved in the 1980s — so the two are a natural pair, and most people visit them together. The building itself is worth a look before you even go in: a contemporary design in terracotta brick laid to evoke the warp and weft of fabric, curved and modern, a deliberate counterpoint to the medina. It was built specifically to honour Saint Laurent's deep, lifelong love affair with Marrakech, which inspired some of his most famous collections.
Inside, the heart of it is a darkened, theatrically lit gallery displaying a rotating selection of pieces from the vast YSL archive — gowns, the iconic 'Le Smoking' tuxedo, sketches, accessories, photographs and film, curated thematically. Because it rotates and the lighting is low to protect the textiles, you're seeing a carefully chosen edit rather than everything at once. There's also a temporary exhibition space that hosts changing shows (sometimes on Berber culture, photography, or other designers), a research library, a bookshop, an auditorium, and a pleasant café — so it functions as a cultural centre, not just a clothes display.
My honest take depends entirely on who you are. If you love fashion, design, or Saint Laurent specifically, this is a genuine highlight of Marrakech and you'll be moved by the craftsmanship — it's a must-do, and you might spend an hour or more. If fashion leaves you cold, the permanent collection is fairly compact and you may find 45 minutes is plenty; the building and the temporary exhibitions might interest you more than the gowns. It's a polished, world-class little museum, but it is niche.
Practical notes: it's right next to Majorelle, so do both in one outing, and buy a combined ticket if you can. Both are extremely popular, so go early or book ahead to avoid queues, as Majorelle in particular gets very crowded. Allow a couple of hours for the pair plus the café. My verdict: worth it for most visitors as a half of the Majorelle experience, and unmissable for anyone with a thread of interest in fashion or design.
