Marrakech is the undisputed nightlife capital — rooftop bars, glamorous clubs like Theatro and Pacha, and dinner-shows in Gueliz and the palmeraie. Casablanca has the most cosmopolitan, local club-and-bar scene. Tangier offers a famous, edgy bohemian bar culture, Agadir has resort nightlife, and beyond these, nights are quieter and centred on cafés, music and food rather than clubbing.
Let me frame this honestly first: Morocco is a Muslim country, so it isn't a wild, alcohol-soaked party destination, and outside a handful of cities the "nightlife" is gentle — café culture, mint tea, live traditional music, a long dinner and the theatre of the evening streets rather than clubbing. That said, there absolutely is a real nightlife scene if you know where to look, and it's concentrated in a few specific places. Knowing which city does which kind of night out lets you plan well.
Marrakech is the clear nightlife capital and where most visitors looking for a "big night" should head. The new town, Gueliz, and the palmeraie on the city's edge are full of options: glamorous nightclubs like Theatro and the Marrakech branch of Pacha, lavish dinner-and-cabaret venues, chic cocktail lounges and a famous rooftop-bar scene where you watch the sun set over the medina with a drink in hand. It ranges from sophisticated hotel bars to full-on international-style clubbing that runs till dawn. Marrakech is also where the dinner-show — Moroccan feast plus music, dancers and fantasia spectacle — is most polished.
For a more local, cosmopolitan and less touristy night, Casablanca is Morocco's most genuinely urban after-dark city. As the country's economic capital it has the most natural bar-and-club culture aimed at young Moroccans and expats rather than tourists — beachfront clubs along the Corniche, live-music venues, jazz bars and a sophisticated dining scene. If you want to see how modern, urban Moroccans actually go out, Casablanca is the place. Tangier, up north, has a different and famous flavour: a storied, slightly bohemian and edgy bar culture rooted in its international "Interzone" past, with atmospheric old bars, a literary-cosmopolitan vibe and a lively café and music scene.
A few others fill specific niches. Agadir, the purpose-built beach resort on the southern coast, has the most conventional package-holiday nightlife — beach bars, resort clubs and a relaxed seaside party atmosphere aimed at international tourists. Coastal towns like Essaouira have a lovely, low-key evening scene built around live Gnaoua and world music, beachfront cafés and relaxed bars rather than clubbing — wonderful in its own way, especially during the music festivals. And in the imperial heart of Fes and the desert and mountain regions, nights are quiet and traditional: this is where "nightlife" means a rooftop dinner, a music evening, stargazing or a hammam, not a dance floor.
My honest guidance: if clubbing and bars are a priority, base your big nights in Marrakech (for glamour and variety) or Casablanca (for an authentic urban scene), with Tangier for atmosphere and Agadir for resort-style fun. Everywhere else, embrace a different and frankly lovely kind of evening — long dinners, live traditional music, rooftop sunsets and the simple magic of a Moroccan square after dark. Match the city to the night you want and you'll never be disappointed. Note too that alcohol is mainly served in licensed hotels, bars, clubs and tourist restaurants rather than everywhere, so plan drinks around those venues.
