For women, pack loose modest clothing covering shoulders and knees: maxi dresses, wide trousers, tunics and long-sleeve tops in breathable cotton or linen. Add two or three scarves, comfortable closed shoes, a crossbody bag, sunglasses, SPF and any personal toiletries you rely on. Skip short shorts, low-cut tops and lots of valuables.

When I advise women on what to pack for Morocco, the guiding principle is loose, modest and breathable — and the good news is that this is also the most comfortable way to dress in the climate. Covering your shoulders and knees is respectful in a fairly conservative country and, practically speaking, draws far less attention in the souks and local neighbourhoods. Maxi dresses, wide-leg trousers, long flowing skirts, tunics and lightweight long-sleeved tops are the backbone of the wardrobe; in cotton and linen they keep you cool in summer and layer easily for winter. You do not need to cover your hair anywhere except, in some cases, when entering a working mosque or shrine.

Scarves are the item I tell every woman to over-pack rather than under-pack — I suggest two or three. A scarf instantly covers your shoulders when you want to, shades your head and neck in the sun, wraps against desert dust or a cold evening, and doubles as a modesty layer if an outfit feels a touch revealing for where you find yourself. They take up almost no space, they are gorgeous to buy locally if you run short, and they solve a dozen small problems on the road. Pair them with comfortable closed walking shoes for the cobbled medinas and one nicer pair for dinners.

On the practical and personal side, bring the toiletries and products you genuinely rely on, because while pharmacies are good, your specific brands may be hard to find. That includes any feminine hygiene products you prefer, your usual skincare, and a small personal medical kit. A crossbody or anti-theft bag worn to the front is my standard recommendation for busy squares and souks, and I always advise leaving valuable jewellery and large amounts of cash at the riad — flashing wealth invites unwanted attention anywhere, and Morocco is no different.

A few things specifically worth packing, and a few worth leaving. Pack a light cardigan or wrap for cool riad evenings and over-air-conditioned interiors, sunglasses and strong SPF, lip balm for the dry air, and a refillable water bottle. A type C/E adapter charges everything. What to leave behind: very short shorts, strappy or low-cut tops worn alone, and anything sheer or tight — not because there is a rule, but because they make you more conspicuous and less comfortable than the loose alternatives. Dress with a little modesty and you will move through Morocco more easily, more coolly, and with far fewer second glances.
