Why Agadir Is the Gateway to Morocco's Wildest Desert
Agadir's Atlantic beaches sit closer to the southern Sahara than most travellers realise. From here the natural desert is not Merzouga but the Draa Valley and, beyond it, Erg Chigaga — the remote, towering dunes past M'hamid that see a fraction of Erg Chebbi's visitors. The road runs through Taroudant, the walled "little Marrakech", across the Anti-Atlas argan country, and on to Ouarzazate and the endless palm groves of the Draa before the sand begins. We turn that drive into a journey worthy of the destination.
Agadir is, in short, the gateway to Morocco's most off-the-beaten-path desert. Erg Chigaga is harder to reach than Erg Chebbi — the final approach is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours of off-road 4x4 piste beyond M'hamid — which is exactly why it rewards you with solitude, silence and some of the finest stargazing in the country, with far fewer camps and far fewer people. Three days reaches the Zagora and Draa dunes comfortably; the remote Erg Chigaga is best given 3 to 4 days so the rough final leg is never rushed.
If you would rather see the famous Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, that is possible from Agadir too, but it is a longer route best built as part of a grand loop toward Marrakech. For most travellers starting on the Atlantic coast, Erg Chigaga and the Draa Valley are the natural and most rewarding choice. Drive times are planning estimates; confirm current road conditions before you travel.

Is 3, 4 or 5 days better from Agadir?
Three days reaches the Zagora and Draa Valley dunes comfortably. Four days is best for the remote Erg Chigaga, whose rough off-road approach should not be rushed. Five days lets you cross from the Atlantic coast all the way to Marrakech with the deep desert in between — a true coast-to-desert grand route.
Is Erg Chigaga better than Erg Chebbi?
Erg Chigaga is wilder, taller in places, and far less visited than Erg Chebbi, making it ideal for travellers seeking solitude. Erg Chebbi (from Marrakech or Fes) is easier to reach by paved road and has more camp options. From Agadir, Erg Chigaga is the natural choice — the longer 4x4 approach is the price of having the dunes almost to yourself.
Can I fly back to Agadir after the desert?
Yes. We can build a round trip that returns you to Agadir, or a one-way crossing that ends in Marrakech (with its own airport) so you avoid backtracking. We arrange the logistics around your flights.
What should I pack for a remote desert tour from Agadir?
Pack layers for big temperature swings — warm by day, cold at night in the open Sahara — plus sun protection, closed shoes and sandals for the sand, and a scarf against wind-blown sand. Because Erg Chigaga camps are remote, a head-lamp and a power bank are especially worth packing, as electricity at remote camps can be limited.
Is a desert tour from Agadir suitable for families with children?
The Draa Valley and Zagora dunes work well for families on a 3-day route. The remote Erg Chigaga involves a longer off-road 4x4 leg that some younger children find tiring, so for families we often recommend the Draa option or splitting the drive over more days. A 4x4 transfer to camp is available for any child who would rather not ride a camel.
