Fes Tours the Shortest Road to Erg Chebbi

Sahara desert tours from Fes are private journeys to the same great Erg Chebbi dunes as the Marrakech route, but by the shortest and greenest approach — around 470 km, roughly 7 to 8 hours, through the alpine town of Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest and the palm-lined Ziz Valley. Many travellers begin in Fes, sleep in the Sahara, and continue to Marrakech as a one-way grand crossing.

Why Fes Is the Shortest, Greenest Road to the Dunes

Fes offers the shortest drive to the Erg Chebbi dunes of any imperial city, and arguably the most scenic. The road climbs through Ifrane — an alpine resort town nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco" — past the Azrou cedar forest with its wild Barbary macaques, across the high plains around Midelt, and down the dramatic Ziz Gorges and palm-lined Ziz Valley before the sand begins at Erfoud, the fossil capital on the desert's edge. At around 470 km and roughly 7 to 8 hours, it is the most efficient approach to the great dunes from the north.

Because Fes is closer to Merzouga than Marrakech is, you spend less time driving and more time in the dunes. That is why Fes is the natural start for a one-way desert crossing: many travellers begin in Fes, overnight in the Sahara at Erg Chebbi, and continue south through the gorges and Ait Benhaddou to Marrakech — seeing the whole country in one seamless private journey, with no backtracking.

The dunes themselves are the same Erg Chebbi reached from Marrakech — Morocco's tallest sand sea, rising to around 150 metres, with the country's widest choice of luxury camps and exceptional dark-sky stargazing at roughly Bortle Class 1 to 2. The difference is the approach: greener and shorter from Fes, longer and more mountainous from Marrakech. Drive times are planning estimates; confirm current road conditions before you travel, especially in winter when the Middle Atlas can see snow.

Questions, Answered

Fes tours — frequently asked.

How far is the Sahara Desert from Fes?
The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are around 470 km from Fes, or 7 to 8 hours of driving — the shortest desert route of any Moroccan imperial city. It is best done over 2 to 3 days. Drive times are planning estimates; confirm current road conditions before you travel.
What overnight stops are on the route from Fes?
On a 2-day round trip the single night is at a desert camp in Erg Chebbi. On a 3-day Fes-to-Marrakech crossing, the first night is at the camp and the second is usually in or near the Dades or Todra gorges before continuing to Marrakech. We tailor the stops to your pace and your flights.
Is 2, 3 or 4 days better for a desert tour from Fes?
Because Fes is the closest imperial city to Merzouga, a 2-day round trip genuinely works for a focused desert overnight. Three days is ideal if you want a one-way crossing to Marrakech, and four days adds the gorges and a second desert night at a relaxed pace. From Fes you can do more in fewer days than from Marrakech.
Is it better to start a desert tour from Fes or Marrakech?
Fes is closer to the Merzouga dunes, so you drive less. Many travellers start in Fes and finish in Marrakech (or the reverse) as a one-way crossing, which is the most efficient way to see the desert and both imperial cities without backtracking. If your flights are fixed to Marrakech, the Marrakech route works too — it is just longer.
Can I fly back to Fes after the desert?
Yes. There are small airports at Errachidia and, seasonally, near the desert, and we can arrange a one-way itinerary that ends in Marrakech or returns you to Fes. We tailor the logistics to your flights so you are not driving the same road twice.
What do you see on the drive from Fes to the desert?
The route passes Ifrane (an alpine resort town), the Azrou cedar forest with its wild monkeys, the high plains around Midelt, and the spectacular Ziz Gorges and palm valley before reaching Erfoud and the dunes — a green, varied approach that contrasts beautifully with the sand.
Is private or group better for a desert tour from Fes?
We run private tours only. A private 4x4 with your own driver-guide means you set the pace, stop where you like for photos in the Ziz Valley or the cedar forest, and choose your camp — rather than being held to a fixed coach timetable. It is the difference between the route being a transfer and the route being part of the trip.
What should I pack for a desert tour from Fes?
Pack layers for big temperature swings — warm by day, cold at night, with the Middle Atlas cooler still and occasionally snowy in winter. Bring a warm jacket or fleece, sun protection, closed shoes plus sandals for the sand, and a scarf against wind-blown sand on the camel trek. Camps provide bedding and blankets; a head-lamp and power bank are worth packing.
