A camel caravan crossing golden Sahara dunes at sunset on a desert tour from Marrakech, with the High Atlas behind

From Marrakech

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) — Morocco's tallest dunes, around 150 m

Drive
Around 9 hours to Merzouga, usually split over 2 days
Days
3 days / 2 nights for Merzouga; 2 days for the closer Zagora dunes

Sahara desert tours from Marrakech are private 4x4 journeys south over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou and the gorges, ending at the great Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga — roughly 560 km, around 9 hours of driving, so almost always split over 2 days with a night in a luxury desert camp. The closer Zagora dunes can be reached in around 7 hours for a shorter 2-day overnight.

Travellers on a Sahara dune at sunrise on a desert tour from Fes, with distant peaks beyond the sand

From Fes

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) — the same great dunes, via a greener north approach

Drive
Around 7 to 8 hours — the shortest desert route of any imperial city
Days
2 days / 1 night round trip; 3 days for a Fes-to-Marrakech crossing

Sahara desert tours from Fes are private journeys to the same great Erg Chebbi dunes as the Marrakech route, but by the shortest and greenest approach — around 470 km, roughly 7 to 8 hours, through the alpine town of Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest and the palm-lined Ziz Valley. Many travellers begin in Fes, sleep in the Sahara, and continue to Marrakech as a one-way grand crossing.

A long camel caravan in silhouette crossing the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset on a grand desert tour from Casablanca

From Casablanca

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga), reached via Marrakech or the imperial cities

Drive
Not a direct drive — a 2-day approach within a multi-day loop
Days
4 days minimum; 5 to 7 days ideal for a full grand loop

Sahara desert tours from Casablanca are multi-day private grand loops: the great dunes lie far to the southeast, so rather than a punishing single drive, we route via Marrakech or the imperial cities to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga and back, so every day earns its place. Plan 4 to 7 days, with airport pickup at Mohammed V the moment you land.

Aerial view of vast, wind-sculpted Sahara dunes reached on a desert tour from Agadir via the Draa Valley

From Agadir

Erg Chigaga / Draa Valley dunes — the wildest, most remote in Morocco

Drive
Around 6 to 7 hours to Zagora; longer to remote Erg Chigaga
Days
3 days for the Draa/Zagora dunes; 4 days for Erg Chigaga

Sahara desert tours from Agadir head for Morocco's most off-the-beaten-path desert: the Draa Valley and Zagora dunes (around 6 to 7 hours via Taroudant and Ouarzazate), or the remote, towering Erg Chigaga dunes beyond M'hamid that see a fraction of Merzouga's visitors. The reward for the longer 4x4 approach is solitude, silence and some of the finest stargazing in the country.

A camel caravan crossing Sahara dunes at sunset with the snow-capped Atlas behind, on a north-to-south desert tour from Tangier

From Tangier

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga), reached on a north-to-south grand tour via Fes

Drive
Not a direct drive — a multi-day route the length of Morocco
Days
5 days minimum; 6 to 8 days ideal for the full crossing

Sahara desert tours from Tangier are north-to-south grand crossings: from where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, the road runs through the blue city of Chefchaouen, the Roman ruins of Volubilis and Fes before reaching the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, so the desert becomes the climax of a complete Moroccan story. Plan 5 to 8 days, often ending in Marrakech without backtracking.

The earthen kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou near Ouarzazate with the snow-capped High Atlas behind — the gateway to the Sahara

From Ouarzazate

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) east; Draa Valley & Erg Chigaga south — both within reach

Drive
Around 4 to 5 hours to Merzouga; the Draa dunes are closer still
Days
2 days / 1 night for an overnight; 3 days to add the gorges or Erg Chigaga

Sahara desert tours from Ouarzazate start at the true gateway to the Moroccan Sahara: the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are around 300 km east — roughly 4 to 5 hours — and the Draa Valley dunes are closer still, so starting here means minimal driving and maximum desert. Surrounded by kasbahs, gorges and palm valleys, Ouarzazate is the ideal base for a short 2-day overnight without the long Atlas crossing.
