Dramatic Canyon
Sheer 300-meter cliff walls tower over a narrow passage where the Todra River has carved Morocco's most dramatic canyon. A rock climbing mecca and natural wonder.
Todra Gorge presents one of Morocco's most awe-inspiring natural spectacles, where sheer limestone cliffs rise 300 meters on either side of a passage just 10 meters wide at its narrowest point. The Todra River, flowing from the High Atlas, has carved this dramatic canyon over millions of years, creating a landscape that attracts adventurers, photographers, and wonder-seekers.
The gorge begins just north of Tinghir, a substantial oasis town at the edge of the Tafilalet plain. The road follows the river through increasingly narrow canyon walls, the scale of the cliffs becoming apparent only when dwarfed by the tiny figures of climbers on the rock face.
Todra has become Morocco's premier rock climbing destination, with over 300 established routes ranging from beginner to expert levels. The limestone offers excellent grip, and the sheer vertical walls provide routes of extraordinary beauty. International climbers arrive year-round, creating a vibrant adventure community.
Beyond climbing, the gorge offers excellent hiking through palm-lined riverbed and side canyons. The Todra oasis extends south of the gorge, with date palms, traditional irrigation channels, and Berber villages offering authentic cultural encounters. A scenic trail connects Todra with the Dades Gorge through mountain villages.
The gorge is at its most dramatic in the morning when sunlight first penetrates the narrow passage, illuminating the pink and orange rock in spectacular fashion. Small cafes at the gorge base provide refreshment while contemplating the magnificent natural architecture.
