Climate Zones

Weather by Region

Morocco spans four distinct climate zones. The coast, mountains, desert, and interior cities each offer dramatically different conditions at any given time.

Atlantic Coast

Best: May - October

Moderated by the Atlantic Ocean, the coast enjoys mild winters and warm summers. Essaouira is famously breezy year-round, making it a summer refuge when inland Morocco swelters.

Key cities: Essaouira, Agadir, Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier

Summer: 22-28 C. Coastal breezes keep things pleasant.
Winter: 14-20 C. Occasional rain, but Agadir gets 300 sunny days per year.

Atlas Mountains

Best: April - June, September - October

Dramatic temperature swings by altitude. Valleys are warm, peaks are snowy in winter. Home to ski resorts and the highest peaks in North Africa. Summer is perfect for trekking.

Key cities: Imlil, Oukaimeden, Ouarzazate, Ifrane

Summer: 20-32 C in valleys, 10-20 C at altitude. Excellent trekking.
Winter: -5 to 15 C depending on altitude. Snow above 2,000 m. Ski season.

Sahara Desert

Best: October - April

Extreme temperatures define the desert. Winters are cool and pleasant for overnight camping and camel treks. Summers are dangerously hot. Spring and autumn offer the ideal balance.

Key cities: Merzouga, M'Hamid, Zagora, Erfoud

Summer: 40-50 C. Dangerously hot. Do not visit June through August.
Winter: 18-24 C days, 0-5 C nights. Bring warm layers for desert camps.

Interior Cities

Best: March - May, September - November

Continental climate with hot summers and cool winters. Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer midday heat in Marrakech regularly exceeds 40 C, while winters are cool with occasional frost.

Key cities: Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, Beni Mellal

Summer: 32-42 C. Very hot midday. Plan indoor activities between 12-4 PM.
Winter: 8-18 C. Cool and pleasant for sightseeing. Some rain.
Cultural Consideration

Traveling During Ramadan

Approximately February 17 - March 18, 2026. Islamic calendar dates shift approximately 11 days earlier each year.

Tips for Traveling During Ramadan

Most tourist restaurants and hotels remain open and serve meals during the day.
Some local restaurants close during daylight hours -- plan ahead or eat at hotels.
Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during fasting hours as a sign of respect.
Traffic can be chaotic in the hour before sunset (Iftar rush).
Evenings come alive after Iftar -- vibrant night markets and social atmosphere.
Many Moroccans take the last days of Ramadan as holiday -- some businesses close.
Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan) is a major 3-day celebration with festivities.
Shopping hours may change: some shops open later and stay open well past midnight.

Advantages of Visiting During Ramadan

Unique cultural experience witnessing a deeply spiritual tradition.
Beautiful Iftar meals are served everywhere -- often communal and generous.
Fewer tourists mean lower prices and quieter attractions.
Vibrant evening atmosphere with special Ramadan foods and entertainment.

Challenges During Ramadan

Some restaurants and cafes closed during the day.
Reduced business hours and slower service.
Alcohol less available (some hotel bars remain open).

Expert Advice

Seasonal Tips

Book Desert Camps Early in Peak

Popular Sahara camps in Merzouga sell out 2-3 months ahead for October through April. Luxury camps book even further in advance.

Layer Strategically

Morocco can swing 15-20 degrees between midday and evening. Layers are more useful than one heavy jacket year-round.

Escape the Heat Vertically

If visiting in summer, head to the mountains or coast. Marrakech at 42 C is just an hour from Imlil at a pleasant 25 C.

Festival Accommodation Tips

During Gnaoua Festival or Mawazine, accommodation prices triple. Book 3-6 months ahead or stay in a nearby city and day-trip.

Winter Desert Camping

Desert nights from November to February drop to near freezing. Ensure your camp provides warm blankets or a quality sleeping bag.

Shoulder Season Sweet Spot

The last week of March and first two weeks of April offer the year's best balance of weather, pricing, and crowd levels.
