Why January Is a Hidden Gem for Morocco Travel
January is the deepest trough of Morocco's tourism calendar. The holiday rush of Christmas and New Year ends abruptly after the first week, and the country settles into its quietest period. Hotels drop to 30-40% occupancy, Marrakech's normally packed Jemaa el-Fna feels almost intimate, and you can explore the tanneries of Fes without jostling through tour groups.
Prices hit their absolute floor. Budget riads that charge $80-100 in peak season drop to $40-60. Luxury properties offer 30-50% discounts, and many throw in free upgrades, spa credits, or complimentary dinners to fill rooms. For the price-conscious traveler, January is unbeatable.
The weather is cool but far from unbearable. Marrakech and the south see daytime highs of 16-18°C under mostly blue skies — colder than December, but still comfortable for all-day sightseeing in a light jacket. The real cold is reserved for evenings and high altitudes, where the Atlas Mountains wear a thick layer of snow and temperatures dip below freezing.
January also brings unique experiences unavailable in other months: the Amazigh New Year (Yennayer) on January 13, the start of almond blossom season in the Anti-Atlas around Tafraoute in late January, and the best skiing conditions at Oukaimeden. The clear winter light — sharp, low-angled, and golden — makes January a favorite among photographers.
January Weather by Region
Marrakech
Cool but sunny. Comfortable for medina exploration with a jacket. Evenings require warm layers.
Fes
Coldest imperial city. Rain more frequent than the south. The medina is beautifully quiet.
Sahara Desert
Warm days, freezing nights. Stunning clarity. Desert camps provide heating and heavy blankets.
Atlas Mountains
Full winter conditions above 2,000m. Ski season at Oukaimeden. Lower valleys see 8-12°C.
Essaouira (Coast)
Mild and breezy. Winter swells bring excellent surfing. Less windy than summer months.
Tangier (North)
Wettest region in January. Moody skies and Atlantic storms. Pack waterproof gear.
What to Do in Morocco in January
Best Activities
- Sahara Desert tours — Warm days make camel treks, 4x4 adventures, and luxury camping genuinely comfortable. Clear winter skies deliver extraordinary stargazing.
- Skiing at Oukaimeden — Morocco's ski resort, 75km from Marrakech at 3,200m, has its best snow in January. Ski in Africa, then dine in Marrakech by evening.
- Amazigh New Year (Jan 13) — Yennayer celebrations with traditional feasts, Amazigh music, and cultural events. Strongest in the Atlas and Souss regions.
- City exploration — Empty medinas in Marrakech, Fes, and Meknes. January is the best month to photograph souks without crowds.
- Almond blossoms (late Jan) — The Ameln Valley near Tafraoute in the Anti-Atlas sees the first pink and white blooms starting late January.
- Cooking classes and hammams — Perfect rainy-day activities. Learn tagine and couscous preparation in intimate settings.
- Surfing — Taghazout and Essaouira receive powerful Atlantic winter swells. Water is 16-17°C with a wetsuit.
What to Skip
- Beach holidays — Water temperatures of 15-17°C and frequent clouds rule out sunbathing everywhere except Agadir.
- High Atlas trekking — Snow and ice above 2,500m require full mountaineering equipment. Toubkal summit is a serious winter climb.
- Northern road trips — The Rif Mountains and north get the most rain. Roads can be muddy and some rural routes are impassable.
- Outdoor dining at night — Evenings are too cold for rooftop terraces without heating. Opt for indoor restaurants with fireplaces.
