Morocco Activities
Soar above Atlantic cliffs at Legzira, ride thermals to 3,500 m over the Atlas, or dune-fly above the Sahara at Dakhla — Morocco offers year-round flying in some of the most dramatic scenery on earth.
Morocco sits at the intersection of Atlantic trade winds, Atlas Mountain thermals, and Saharan heat — creating a diversity of flying conditions that few countries can match. Coastal soaring along the dramatic red cliffs between Agadir and Sidi Ifni is possible 300+ days per year. The Atlas foothills generate powerful thermals that carry pilots above 3,500 m with views from the Sahara to the Atlantic. And Dakhla's sand dunes offer some of the smoothest, most consistent low-level soaring anywhere in the world.
The paragliding scene in Morocco is still developing — this is not Interlaken or Oludeniz. But for pilots who value uncrowded airspace, genuine adventure, and landscapes that will appear in every photo for the rest of their lives, Morocco delivers something that polished European sites cannot.
Coastal soaring
Altitude: 50 - 300 m above sea level
Conditions: Reliable NW-N coastal lift, 15-25 km/h
Season: Year-round (best October - May)
Flights: Tandem flights, coastal soaring, acro over water
Tandem: Multiple operators, 800-1,500 MAD ($80-150) per flight
Morocco's paragliding capital. The Atlantic cliffs between Agadir and Legzira (near Sidi Ifni) produce consistent coastal lift along dramatic red rock formations. Pilots soar above natural rock arches, fishing villages, and empty beaches. The Legzira site is particularly photogenic — launching from cliff-top and soaring above the famous rock arches.
Thermal flying
Altitude: 800 - 1,200 m launch, thermals to 3,500 m+
Conditions: Strong thermals, light wind, good visibility
Season: March - June, September - November
Flights: Cross-country, thermal soaring, tandem
Tandem: Available through Marrakech-based operators, 1,200-2,000 MAD ($120-200)
The Atlas foothills 60 km south of Marrakech produce strong thermals from mid-morning, allowing flights of 2+ hours and cross-country distances of 50+ km for experienced pilots. The launch at Aguergour overlooks the Haouz Plain stretching to Marrakech — on clear days, you can see the city's minarets from 3,000 m. This is serious flying, not a beach experience.
Dune soaring / coastal
Altitude: 10 - 80 m (low-level dune flying)
Conditions: Laminar NE trade wind, 15-30 km/h, almost zero turbulence
Season: Year-round (best October - April)
Flights: Dune soaring, ground handling, beginner training, speed flying
Tandem: Limited operators, arrange in advance, 1,000-1,500 MAD ($100-150)
Dakhla is unique — consistent trade wind blowing over smooth sand dunes creates perfect, turbulence-free lift at low altitude. Pilots soar 5-30 m above the dunes with the Atlantic on one side and the Sahara lagoon on the other. The soft sand provides forgiving landing zones. Many European schools run winter training camps here. Also excellent for speedwing and speed flying.
Ridge soaring / thermal
Altitude: 1,600 - 2,000 m launch
Conditions: Ridge lift along cedar-covered ridges, moderate thermals
Season: April - June, September - October
Flights: Ridge soaring, scenic flights over cedar forests
Tandem: Very limited, contact FRMSA for local pilots
The Middle Atlas ridges near Ifrane offer scenic flying over one of Morocco's most beautiful landscapes — cedar forests, mountain lakes, and the rolling plateau of the Saiss Plain. Less developed than the coast for paragliding, but pilots visiting the Fes/Meknes area can find good flying days. The launch sites are informal — local knowledge is essential.
Coastal soaring
Altitude: 30 - 150 m above sea level
Conditions: Strong NW wind (often too strong for paragliding)
Season: October - March (when wind drops below 25 km/h)
Flights: Coastal soaring, cliff launches
Tandem: Rarely available due to wind conditions
Essaouira is known for strong wind, which makes it a kitesurfing paradise but challenging for paragliding. On lighter wind days (below 25 km/h), the cliffs south of town offer beautiful coastal soaring with views of the Mogador Islands. The window is narrow — check conditions carefully. Better suited to experienced pilots than beginners.

March - May
Excellent (all sites)
Atlas thermals develop strongly. Coast is consistent. Dakhla trade winds moderate. The best all-round season for variety.
June - August
Coastal only
Too hot and turbulent inland. Coastal sites remain good in morning and evening. Dakhla can be windy. European schools run fewer camps.
September - November
Excellent
Thermal season resumes inland. Coast is perfect. Dakhla camps open for the winter season. Warmth without summer extremes.
December - February
Good (coast + Dakhla)
Best Dakhla season. Coastal sites flyable most days. Atlas can be snowy and cold at altitude. Many European pilots winter in Morocco.
Yes. Morocco has an active scene with coastal soaring along the Atlantic, thermal flying in the Atlas Mountains, and dune soaring in Dakhla. Tandem flights are available for non-pilots, and several schools offer beginner courses.
Coastal tandem flights cost 800-1,500 MAD ($80-150) for 15-30 minutes. Thermal flights (30-60 minutes) run 1,500-2,500 MAD ($150-250). GoPro video is usually an additional 200-400 MAD.
Agadir/Legzira for coastal soaring (most operators, most consistent). Aguergour near Marrakech for thermal flying. Dakhla for unique dune soaring with near-zero turbulence.
Coastal sites: year-round (best October-May). Atlas thermals: March-June and September-November. Dakhla: October-April. Spring and autumn are best for the widest variety.
Not for tandem flights — you are a passenger. Solo flying requires a paragliding license (IPPI card or national equivalent). Several schools in Agadir and Marrakech offer introductory courses.
With a certified pilot, tandem paragliding has an excellent safety record. Choose operators affiliated with the FRMSA. Check pilot certification and insurance. Wind conditions can be strong on the coast.
Consistent trade wind over smooth sand dunes creates turbulence-free lift at low altitude. Pilots soar 5-30 m above sand with Atlantic on one side and Sahara lagoon on the other. Soft sand landings make it ideal for beginners.
Yes. Paragliders enter Morocco duty-free as sporting equipment. Airlines treat the bag as standard luggage. No equipment rental is available for solo pilots — you must bring everything.
