Marrakech Camel Rides at Golden Hour

A camel ride near Marrakech is a short, scenic outing — usually 20 to 60 minutes — across the rocky Agafay hills 30 km southwest of the city, or through the palm groves of the Palmeraie closer to town. It is the gentle, swaying photograph-and-experience version of camel riding, enough for the memory without the multi-hour commitment of a Sahara trek. For the true desert caravan, see our Sahara tours. Confirm current rates when you book.

A Short Ride near the City — and the Honest Truth About the Sahara

A camel ride near Marrakech is a short, scenic outing rather than a desert expedition. A short camel ride across the stony Agafay hills at golden hour is the classic — usually 20 to 60 minutes, enough for the photograph and the gentle, swaying experience without the multi-hour commitment of a Sahara trek. Several camps and operators offer it, and many pair it with a sunset dinner at one of the stylish Agafay camps an hour from the medina. Closer to town, the Palmeraie palm oasis offers an even shorter, sandier ride.

It is worth being honest about what this is and is not. The Agafay is a rocky stone desert, not the Sahara — there are no towering golden dunes here, and a 20-to-60-minute ride does not replace a true dune caravan. If your heart is set on the classic golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, that is a different trip entirely: from Marrakech it is roughly an 8-to-10-hour drive each way, so it needs at least three days, with the genuine camel trek running about one to one and a half hours into the sand to an overnight desert camp.

For most travellers with only a day or an afternoon in Marrakech, the short Agafay or Palmeraie ride is exactly right: easy, photogenic, suitable for children and first-timers, and a lovely contrast to the medina. For those who can spare two or three days and want the real Sahara, we run full desert tours to Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. Many people do both — a short ride to bookend their Marrakech days, and a Sahara journey on the main trip. Prices vary by ride length and inclusions; confirm current rates when you book.

The Agafay plateau is exposed and shadeless, so in the hot months (June to August) ride at sunset and bring sun protection. A short ride works year-round; the Palmeraie offers more shade. Confirm current rates and timings when you book.

Questions, Answered

Marrakech tours — frequently asked.

How long is a camel ride near Marrakech?
Short — usually 20 to 60 minutes in the saddle. A camel ride near Marrakech, whether in the Agafay hills or the Palmeraie palm groves, is the gentle, photogenic version of camel riding, enough for the experience and the photograph without the multi-hour commitment of a Sahara trek. With pickup and the drive out to Agafay, the whole outing is a half-day or a sunset evening.
Is this the same as a Sahara camel trek?
No, and we say so plainly. A ride near Marrakech crosses the rocky Agafay stone desert or the Palmeraie — not the Sahara's towering golden dunes. The real Sahara camel trek runs about one to one and a half hours into the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga to an overnight camp, and from Marrakech that is roughly an 8-to-10-hour drive each way, needing at least three days. If you want the genuine dunes, see our Sahara desert tours.
How much does a camel ride near Marrakech cost?
Prices vary by the length of the ride and whether it is combined with a transfer or dinner, so treat any figure as orientation and confirm current rates when you book. A short Palmeraie ride is the most affordable, an Agafay sunset ride is a step up, and a ride finishing with dinner at an Agafay camp costs more again because it includes the meal and the evening. We will quote the current rate for your chosen option.
Is hotel pickup included?
On Agafay rides, hotel or riad pickup and return are standard, since the Agafay is around 30 km southwest of the city. The Palmeraie is much closer, so pickup is usually included or it is a short taxi ride. We confirm your pickup time and meeting point when we arrange the ride.
What should I wear for a camel ride?
Wear long, comfortable trousers (jeans or similar) to avoid chafing against the saddle, and closed shoes for the sandy or stony ground. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen — the Agafay is exposed — and a scarf, which is genuinely useful against dust and sun. For a sunset ride, add a light layer, as the plateau cools quickly once the sun drops.
Is a camel ride suitable for children and first-timers?
Yes — a short camel ride is one of the best family activities near Marrakech and needs no experience. The camels are led at a walking pace by a handler, the ride is gentle and swaying, and children usually love it. For very young children, a parent can often ride alongside or share a camel. Because the Agafay and Palmeraie rides are short, they suit families far better than the long Sahara journey.
When is the best time of day to ride?
Late afternoon and sunset, without question. The light turns golden, the ochre hills glow, the temperature drops, and you get the classic camel-silhouette photograph — and you can finish with dinner at an Agafay camp. The most comfortable months overall are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November); in summer, ride at sunset and bring sun protection for the exposed plateau.
How far in advance should I book?
A short ride can often be arranged a day or two ahead, but sunset rides with dinner at the popular Agafay camps fill up in spring and autumn and around weekends, so a few days' notice helps. If you want a combo (camel and quad) or a private ride, book a little earlier. For the multi-day Sahara trek, plan further ahead. Tell us your dates and we will reserve the right option.
