Yes — and you should. The hammam (steam bath) and gommage scrub is a centuries-old ritual, available everywhere from neighbourhood public baths to luxurious riad spas. Add-on argan-oil massages are widely offered. Choose between an authentic local hammam for a few dirhams or a private spa for full pampering.
Getting a massage in Morocco is not just possible — it is woven into the culture, and skipping the experience would be a genuine miss. The cornerstone is the hammam, a steam bath where you are scrubbed down with black soap and a coarse kessa glove until layers of skin you never knew you had come away. Most riads and hotels have a spa offering this, and almost all of them pair it with an optional massage using local argan or rose oil. After a long day on dusty roads, the combination of steam, scrub and a slow oil massage is the single best thing you can do for tired travellers.
There are really two worlds to choose from, and I encourage guests to try both if they have time. The public hammam is the local, communal experience: a neighbourhood steam room used by Moroccans for generations, where you bring your own kit (or buy it at the door), pay a tiny sum, and either scrub yourself or pay an attendant a little extra to do it properly. It is steamy, social, gender-segregated and entirely unglamorous in the best way. Marrakech, Fes and most towns have well-known ones that welcome visitors — ask your riad for the nearest reputable bath.
At the other end sits the private spa hammam, and this is where the country quietly competes with the best wellness destinations anywhere. The luxury riads and palace hotels offer marble suites, individual rooms, fluffy robes and therapists trained in both traditional gommage and proper full-body massage. Expect rose-petal baths, ghassoul clay wraps and argan rituals presented with real ceremony. It costs many times more than the public bath, but for a honeymoon, a special evening or simply a serious unwind, it is worth every dirham.
A few honest pointers. Hammams are normally separated by gender or run on alternating timings for men and women, so check before you turn up. Modesty norms mean you keep underwear on in a public hammam; private spas are more relaxed but always ask. Tip the attendant who scrubs you — it is expected and they earn little. And book ahead for the high-end spas in peak season, because the good slots fill. Our team can reserve a private hammam-and-massage ritual at a beautiful riad as part of any itinerary.
