Moderately conservative, but relaxed toward tourists. It is a Muslim country where modest dress and discretion are appreciated, especially in rural areas and medinas. Cities like Marrakech and coastal Essaouira are liberal. Cover shoulders and knees, and you will move comfortably anywhere.
Morocco sits in a comfortable middle ground — more conservative than Europe, far more relaxed than the Gulf. As a tourist you are given plenty of latitude, and nobody expects you to dress or behave like a local. What earns warmth is a little awareness: dressing modestly, keeping public affection low-key, and reading the room between a buzzing city and a quiet village.
The contrast between places is bigger than the contrast between Morocco and home. Marrakech medinas, Essaouira on the coast, and the modern neighbourhoods of Casablanca and Rabat are cosmopolitan and used to international visitors. Step into a small Atlas village or a traditional medina, though, and the unspoken code tightens considerably — that is where I dress most carefully and lower my voice.
For both men and women, covering shoulders and knees is the simple rule that opens every door, from souks to mosque courtyards to family homes. Women do not need a headscarf for daily life (only to enter the few mosques open to non-Muslims), but loose, lightweight layers feel right and double as sun protection. I keep a scarf in my bag for instant extra cover.
Behaviour reads louder than wardrobe. Heavy public kissing, drunkenness, and aggressive bargaining all land badly; warmth, a few words of greeting, and patience land beautifully. During Ramadan the conservative dial turns up — eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight is frowned on — so I am extra discreet if I visit then. Respect a few customs and Morocco opens up generously.
