The Moroccan flag is a plain red field with a green five-pointed star at its centre. The red represents bravery, strength and the Alaouite dynasty; the green star is a pentagram known as the Seal of Solomon, symbolising Islam, life, hope, and the five pillars of the faith. It was adopted in 1915.

The Moroccan flag is striking in its simplicity: a bold red rectangle with a single green five-pointed star, outlined and open in the centre. You'll see it everywhere once you're here — draped from kasbahs, fluttering over public buildings, painted on mountainsides — and it's worth knowing the meaning, because Moroccans are quietly proud of it.

The red field has deep roots. Red has long been associated with the sharifs of Morocco and the ruling Alaouite dynasty, which has held the throne since the 17th century, and it's traditionally read as a symbol of bravery, hardiness and strength. For centuries Morocco actually flew a plain red flag; the green emblem was added in 1915 under Sultan Yusef, partly so the country's flag could be told apart from other red banners at sea.

That green star is the part people ask about. It's a pentagram — a five-pointed star drawn in a single continuous line — known as the Seal of Solomon, a motif with long currency in Islamic and Moroccan visual culture. Green is the colour of Islam and of life and hope, and the five points are widely understood to evoke the five pillars of Islam. So the flag compresses faith, dynasty and national character into two colours and one elegant shape.

Why does this matter to you as a visitor? Partly because the flag is a window into how seamlessly religion, monarchy and national identity are woven together here — a theme you'll feel throughout a trip. And practically, it pays to treat national symbols with respect: the flag, the king's image, and religious motifs all carry real significance. A little awareness goes a long way, and showing genuine interest in what the green star means is the kind of small gesture Moroccans warmly appreciate.
