A budget riad runs 250–500 MAD ($25–50) per night, a lovely mid-range riad 600–1,500 MAD ($60–150), and a luxury or boutique riad 1,800–5,000+ MAD ($180–500+). Most rates include a generous Moroccan breakfast. Marrakech and Fes sit at the top of the range.
A riad — a traditional courtyard house turned guesthouse — is the experience most people come to Morocco for, and the good news is they span every budget. At the affordable end, simple, clean riads in Fes, Marrakech, or Chefchaouen go for 250–500 MAD ($25–50) a night, usually with a rooftop, a plunge of cold tiles underfoot, and breakfast included. You won’t get a pool, but you’ll get the courtyard, the silence, and the welcome.
The sweet spot for most travellers is 600–1,500 MAD ($60–150) per night. Here you get beautifully restored riads with carved plaster, zellige tiles, a small dipping pool or hammam, attentive hosts, and a breakfast spread of msemen, eggs, fresh juice, and honey that easily covers lunch too. This is the band I book most couples into — it’s genuine luxury for the money and a world away from a chain hotel.
Luxury and design riads — think a handful of suites, a private hammam, a rooftop dinner cooked to order, and a staff-to-guest ratio that feels like a private home — start around 1,800 MAD ($180) and climb to 5,000 MAD ($500) and well beyond for the famous addresses. Marrakech’s most celebrated riads and palace hotels can run far higher in peak season. For honeymoons we often pair one or two nights of this with mid-range nights elsewhere.
Honest variables: location and season move the needle the most. Marrakech and Fes medinas are pricier than Essaouira, Meknes, or the smaller towns. Spring and autumn (the peak) and any riad near a famous square cost more; summer and the desert shoulder months are cheaper. Book directly with the riad where you can — many give better rates and a warmer reception than the big booking platforms.
