Overview

2 days, Asilah to Paradise Beach

Asilah is a small walled Atlantic town about 46km south of Tangier, wrapped in ramparts the Portuguese built after seizing the port in 1471. Its blue-and-white medina is famous for vivid murals repainted each summer during the Asilah Arts Festival (the Moussem Culturel, held since 1978). This relaxed 2-day itinerary covers what to see and do in and around town: the Portuguese sea walls and Krikia bastion, the gate of Bab Homar, the painted artist lanes and Raissouli Palace, plus a beach day on the golden dunes of Paradise Beach a few kilometres south.

Suitability

Is this 2-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around an unhurried, relaxed rhythm — long mornings, time to linger over mint tea and few box-ticking days. Days are gentle with little strenuous walking, so it suits most travellers, including families and first-time visitors to Morocco. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 2 days and want to see Asilah, Paradise Beach
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You prefer comfort over roughing it — riads, hotels and a private vehicle throughout

The journey, day by day

Your 2-day Morocco itinerary

A full breakdown of every day — morning, afternoon and evening, plus where you eat, where you sleep and what to know before you set off. Everything is private and fully adjustable.

Day 1: Ramparts, the Painted Medina & Bab Homar — Asilah
Asilah

Day 1

Ramparts, the Painted Medina & Bab Homar

Asilah

Spend your first day inside Asilah's compact walled town, ringed by ramparts the Portuguese raised after they took the port in 1471. Climb the Krikia bastion above the breakers, then weave through a brilliant-white medina trimmed in blue and freshly painted murals. Everything sits within a 15-minute stroll, so leave the car behind. Quiet, breezy and famously artistic, Asilah rewards slow wandering between galleries, ceramic studios and sea-facing cafes.

Morning

1.5-2 hours

Portuguese Ramparts & Krikia Bastion

Walk the restored Portuguese-era sea walls and climb to the Krikia, the cliff-edge bastion where cannons once guarded the Atlantic approach. The ramparts frame classic views of surf, whitewashed houses and fishing boats, and lead past Bab Homar, the landward gate still carved with a faded Portuguese coat of arms.

Afternoon

3 hours

Painted Medina & Art Galleries

Explore the blue-and-white medina, repainted with vivid murals each summer during the Asilah Arts Festival (the Moussem Culturel, running since 1978). Browse small galleries, ceramic workshops and the Centre Hassan II near the Raissouli Palace, the clifftop mansion built by the early-20th-century brigand-pasha Moulay Ahmed er Raissouli.

Evening

2-3 hours

Sunset on the Ramparts & Seafood

Time golden hour for the sea walls, where the Atlantic turns copper behind the white town. Then pick fresh fish at a grill near the Bab el Bahr sea gate, or settle on a medina terrace for tagine and mint tea as the murals glow under the streetlights.

Travel note · Asilah is one of Morocco's easiest towns to navigate - the medina is small, flat and walkable. Bring a light layer, as the Atlantic breeze picks up after sunset.

Day 2: Paradise Beach & the Atlantic Coast — Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach

Day 2

Paradise Beach & the Atlantic Coast

Paradise Beach · 20 km · Approx. 30 minutes round trip to Paradise Beach drive

Trade the ramparts for open sand. A few kilometres south of town lies Paradise Beach (Plage Paradis), a wide crescent of golden dunes reached by a short drive, a grand taxi or a seasonal boat from the harbour. Spend the morning swimming and walking the shore, then loop back to Asilah for a final wander through the murals. With clear blue water and few buildings, it is a relaxed counterpoint to the painted streets.

Morning

3-4 hours

Paradise Beach

Head about 8km south to Paradise Beach, a broad sweep of dunes and clear Atlantic water that gives the town its summer escape. Walk the sand, swim where it is sheltered, and stop at a simple beach shack for grilled sardines and salad. In high season a small boat runs from Asilah's harbour.

Afternoon

2-3 hours

Raissouli Palace & Medina Galleries

Back in town, take a closer look at the Raissouli Palace and the Centre Hassan II, the cultural hub that anchors the arts festival, then revisit the medina lanes for ceramics, woven goods and original art. Finish with coffee on a rampart cafe overlooking the sea.

Evening

2 hours

Last Sunset over the Sea Walls

Return to the ramparts for a final golden hour as fishing boats come in. If your visit falls in July or August, the medina hums with the open-air concerts, poetry and live mural-painting of the Asilah Arts Festival, the town's biggest celebration.

2-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

How many days do you need in Asilah?

Two days is ideal. One day covers the Portuguese ramparts, Bab Homar and the painted blue-and-white medina, while a second day lets you enjoy Paradise Beach and revisit the galleries. Many travellers also stop in Asilah on a day trip from Tangier, but staying overnight lets you enjoy the ramparts at sunset once the day visitors leave.

How far is Asilah from Tangier?

Asilah lies about 46km south of Tangier on the Atlantic coast, roughly a 45-minute drive. There are also frequent trains and grand taxis that make the trip in under an hour, so Asilah is easy to reach as a day trip or a relaxed overnight base.

What is the Asilah Arts Festival?

The Asilah Arts Festival, or Moussem Culturel International d'Asilah, has run each summer since 1978. Artists paint fresh murals directly onto the whitewashed medina walls, and the town hosts concerts, poetry, workshops and exhibitions. It is the reason Asilah is known as Morocco's open-air art gallery.

Why is Asilah painted blue and white?

Asilah's medina is traditionally whitewashed and trimmed with cobalt blue, echoing its Andalusian and Atlantic heritage. The town is best known, though, for the bold murals repainted across its walls each summer for the Asilah Arts Festival, which add vivid colour throughout the lanes.

Are the Asilah ramparts Portuguese?

Yes. The Portuguese captured Asilah in 1471 and built the fortified ramparts and bastions that still ring the medina today. Landmarks such as the Krikia sea bastion and Bab Homar gate, carved with a Portuguese coat of arms, date from this era of Atlantic fortress-building.

What is Paradise Beach in Asilah?

Paradise Beach (Plage Paradis) is a wide, dune-backed Atlantic beach about 8km south of Asilah. With golden sand and clear water, it is the town's favourite summer escape, reached by a short drive, a grand taxi or a seasonal boat from the harbour. There is little shade, so bring sun protection.

Who was Raissouli and what is his palace?

Moulay Ahmed er Raissouli was a powerful, notorious early-20th-century local chieftain and pasha known for kidnappings and rebellion against colonial powers. His clifftop residence in Asilah, the Raissouli Palace, overlooks the Atlantic and now anchors part of the town's cultural life near the Centre Hassan II.

Is Asilah worth visiting?

Yes. Asilah offers a compact, walkable medina ringed by Portuguese ramparts, striking street murals, a relaxed seaside atmosphere and easy beaches, all far quieter than the big imperial cities. It makes a charming 2-day break or an easy day trip from Tangier.

When is the best time to visit Asilah?

Late spring to early autumn (April to October) brings the warmest, sunniest weather, ideal for the ramparts and beach. July and August are the liveliest months, coinciding with the Asilah Arts Festival, but they are also the busiest, so book accommodation well ahead.

Can you do Asilah as a day trip?

Yes. With trains and grand taxis taking under an hour from Tangier, Asilah works well as a day trip. A day is enough to walk the ramparts and painted medina, but staying overnight lets you add Paradise Beach and enjoy a sunset on the sea walls.
