Overview

2 days, Chefchaouen to Talassemtane National Park

This 2-day Chefchaouen itinerary blends one slow day in the famous Blue Pearl medina with a half-day hike into the mountains. Founded in 1471 and washed in shades of indigo, the old town centres on Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the 15th-century Kasbah and the Spanish Mosque sunset viewpoint, with the Ras el-Maa spring at its edge. Day two heads ~28km to Akchour in Talassemtane National Park to hike to the Grand Cascade waterfall and the natural God's Bridge arch. It is the perfect relaxed mountain break in northern Morocco.

Suitability

Is this 2-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around an unhurried, relaxed rhythm — long mornings, time to linger over mint tea and few box-ticking days. Days are gentle with little strenuous walking, so it suits most travellers, including families and first-time visitors to Morocco. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 2 days and want to see Chefchaouen, Akchour, Talassemtane National Park
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You prefer comfort over roughing it — riads, hotels and a private vehicle throughout

The journey, day by day

Your 2-day Morocco itinerary

A full breakdown of every day — morning, afternoon and evening, plus where you eat, where you sleep and what to know before you set off. Everything is private and fully adjustable.

01

Day 1: The Blue Pearl Medina

Chefchaouen

Spend day one losing yourself in Chefchaouen's blue-washed lanes. Founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali ben Rachid as a mountain fortress, the "Blue Pearl" of the Rif sits around 600m up and is painted in countless shades of indigo. You orient on Plaza Uta el-Hammam beneath the red Kasbah and octagonal-minareted Grand Mosque, drift through photogenic alleys and craft stalls, follow the river to the Ras el-Maa spring, then climb to the Spanish Mosque for a glowing sunset over the whole blue town.

Morning

2 hours

Plaza Uta el-Hammam & the Kasbah

Start on the main square, then tour the 15th-century Kasbah built by the city's founder - its ochre ramparts, tranquil Andalusian gardens and small ethnographic museum, with a tower climb for first views over the blue rooftops.

Afternoon

3 hours

Blue Alleys & Ras el-Maa

Wander the indigo medina - Bab el-Ain, flower-pot stairways and weavers' workshops - then follow the lane to Ras el-Maa, the cascading spring where locals still wash laundry and cafes line the water.

Evening

2 hours

Sunset from the Spanish Mosque

Walk up the short hill east of the medina to the Spanish Mosque (Bouzaafer, built in the 1920s) for the definitive panorama of the blue city glowing against the Rif, then dinner on a medina terrace.

Meals

  • LunchRecommended · Cafe Clock Chaouen or a Plaza Uta el-Hammam terrace

Travel note · The medina is steep and stepped - comfortable shoes help. Morning offers the best light and the fewest crowds for blue-alley photography.

02

Day 2: Akchour Waterfalls & God's Bridge

Akchour · 56 km · 1.5 hours round trip drive

Trade blue streets for green mountains on a half-day hike into Talassemtane National Park. A short drive (~28km, about 45 minutes) reaches the Akchour trailhead, where two classic routes branch off: a shorter walk to the God's Bridge (Pont de Dieu), a soaring natural rock arch over the river, and a longer trail following the water to the Grand Cascade, a tall waterfall feeding turquoise swimming pools. Riverside cafes serve mint tea and tagine, and you return to Chefchaouen by late afternoon.

Morning

1 hour

Drive to Akchour & the Trailhead

Transfer from Chefchaouen to the village of Akchour (~28km) inside Talassemtane National Park, a protected reserve famous for its rare Moroccan fir forests, and meet your local mountain guide at the dam trailhead.

Afternoon

3-4 hours

Hike to the Grand Cascade or God's Bridge

Follow the river either to the towering Grand Cascade waterfall (about 3-4 hours round trip) with its turquoise plunge pools for a swim, or take the shorter route to the God's Bridge natural arch, pausing at riverside cafes.

Evening

2-3 hours

Return & Final Blue Evening

Drive back to Chefchaouen and reward tired legs with a relaxed last evening - mint tea on a rooftop, a slow stroll through the lamplit blue lanes and a farewell Rif-mountain dinner.

Meals

  • BreakfastAt hotel · Breakfast at the guesthouse
  • LunchRecommended · A riverside cafe at Akchour (grilled tagine and fresh mint tea)
  • DinnerRecommended · Aladdin or a Plaza Uta el-Hammam rooftop

Where you sleep

Travel note · Wear proper trainers or hiking shoes - the Akchour trail is rocky with river crossings. Start in the morning to allow time for the full Grand Cascade walk and a swim.

2-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Why is Chefchaouen painted blue?

There is no single proven reason. Popular theories credit Jewish refugees who settled here in the 1930s and painted the walls blue as a spiritual symbol, while locals also say the colour repels mosquitoes and keeps the streets cool. Whatever the origin, the blue-washing is now lovingly maintained for its beauty.

When was Chefchaouen founded?

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali ben Rachid as a fortified town (kasbah) to resist Portuguese and Spanish incursions into northern Morocco. It later absorbed Andalusian and Jewish refugees from Spain, which shaped its distinctive architecture and crafts.

Is 2 days enough for Chefchaouen?

Two days is ideal. One relaxed day covers the blue medina, the Kasbah, Plaza Uta el-Hammam, Ras el-Maa and the Spanish Mosque sunset, and a second day lets you hike to the Akchour waterfalls in the Rif. Many travellers visit on a day trip, but staying overnight is far more rewarding.

How do you get to Chefchaouen?

Chefchaouen has no airport or train station, so you arrive by road. Buses and shared grand taxis run from Tangier (about 2 hours), Tetouan (about 1 hour) and Fes (around 4 hours). A private transfer or driver is the most comfortable option, especially with luggage.

Is the Akchour waterfalls hike difficult?

It is a moderate hike rather than a hard one. The walk to the Grand Cascade takes roughly three to four hours round trip over rocky riverside paths with some scrambling and stream crossings, while the God's Bridge route is shorter and easier. Decent shoes and a reasonable fitness level are enough.

What is the Spanish Mosque in Chefchaouen?

The Spanish Mosque (Mosque Bouzaafer) is a small, never-used mosque built on a hill east of the medina during the Spanish protectorate in the 1920s. It is now Chefchaouen's most popular viewpoint, reached by a 20-30 minute uphill walk, and is famous for sunset panoramas of the blue city.

What is Ras el-Maa?

Ras el-Maa is a small waterfall and spring at the eastern edge of the medina where fresh mountain water cascades down. Local residents still come here to wash clothes, and the surrounding cafes make it a lovely, shaded spot to rest with a glass of mint tea.

Can you swim at the Akchour waterfalls?

Yes. The Grand Cascade and several pools along the Akchour trail offer cool, turquoise swimming spots that are especially welcome in warmer months. Bring a swimsuit and a towel, and take care on the slippery rocks around the water.

Is Chefchaouen worth visiting?

Very much so. Beyond the photogenic blue streets, Chefchaouen offers a relaxed mountain pace, authentic Rif crafts such as wool garments and woven blankets, excellent viewpoints and easy access to the waterfalls of Talassemtane National Park - a refreshing contrast to Morocco's busy imperial cities.

When is the best time to visit Chefchaouen?

Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November) are best, with mild weather for both wandering the medina and hiking at Akchour. Summers are busy but the Rif altitude keeps it cooler than the cities, while winters are quiet, green and occasionally wet and cold.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • Photograph the blue alleys early - soft morning light and empty lanes beat the midday day-trip crowds
  • Chefchaouen has no airport or train station; arrive by bus or grand taxi from Fes (~4h), Tangier (~2h) or Tetouan (~1h)
  • Bring proper footwear for the Akchour hike - the trail is rocky with several river crossings
  • Carry cash; many small medina guesthouses, cafes and craft stalls do not take cards
  • Always ask before photographing local people, who often dislike being part of tourists' photos
  • Pack a swimsuit if you want to swim in the cool pools beneath the Grand Cascade
  • Evenings at 600m altitude get cool even in summer, so bring a light layer

Packing list

What to pack

  • Trainers or light hiking shoes for the medina steps and Akchour trail
  • A swimsuit and quick-dry towel for the waterfall pools
  • Light, modest layers plus a warm layer for cool Rif evenings
  • A sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A reusable water bottle for the hike
  • Cash in small denominations (limited card acceptance)
  • A camera or phone with plenty of storage for the blue lanes
  • A small daypack for the waterfalls hike
  • A light rain layer in spring or autumn
