Overview

3 days, Dakhla to White Dune

Dakhla is a kitesurfing legend on a narrow ~40km peninsula in Morocco's far south, where a flat, shallow lagoon sits between the open Atlantic and the Sahara and the trade winds blow on around 300 days a year. Reached by air (roughly 2.5 hours from Casablanca), it is one of the world's friendliest flat-water spots. This active 3-day itinerary covers daily sessions on the lagoon and its famous Speed Spot, a downwinder to the White Dune, fresh lagoon oysters, flamingos and a Dragon Island desert excursion.

Suitability

Is this 3-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around an unhurried, relaxed rhythm — long mornings, time to linger over mint tea and few box-ticking days. Expect some early starts, a few longer drives and a fair amount of walking on uneven medina lanes and dunes — a reasonable level of fitness helps. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 3 days and want to see Dakhla, Dakhla Lagoon, White Dune
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You are happy to trade a few longer drives for bucket-list landscapes

The journey, day by day

Your 3-day Morocco itinerary

A full breakdown of every day — morning, afternoon and evening, plus where you eat, where you sleep and what to know before you set off. Everything is private and fully adjustable.

Day 1: Arrival by Air & First Lagoon Session — Dakhla
Dakhla

Day 1

Arrival by Air & First Lagoon Session

Dakhla · 30 km · Approx. 30-45 minutes airport to lagoon camps drive

Dakhla sits at the tip of a narrow ~40km peninsula in Morocco's far south, with the open Atlantic on one side and a vast, shallow lagoon on the other. Almost everyone arrives by air - it is a long way from the north - so today is about touching down, transferring to your kite camp on the lagoon, and getting straight onto the flat, warm water for an easy first ride. The lagoon's waist-deep, glassy conditions and reliable trade winds make it one of the friendliest places on earth to kite.

Morning

1-2 hours

Flight to Dakhla & Transfer to the Lagoon

Fly into Dakhla airport (about 2.5 hours from Casablanca, with connections via Agadir). Your camp meets you for the transfer along the peninsula to the lagoon-side lodges, many clustered around the kilometre markers south of town. Settle in over tea with the wind already humming.

Afternoon

2-3 hours

First Flat-Water Kite Session

Rig up for an easy first session on the lagoon. The water is shallow, flat and warm, so you can stand up between runs - perfect for beginners taking a lesson and for freestyle riders dialling in tricks. Coaches set you up with the right kite size for the day's wind.

Evening

2-3 hours

Sunset Over the Lagoon

As the wind drops, watch the sun melt into the lagoon from the camp deck. Dine on fresh fish or a tagine, swap riding tips with fellow kiters, and enjoy the silence and star-filled Saharan sky once the day's breeze finally stills.

Meals

  • BreakfastOwn expense
  • LunchIncluded · Light lunch at the kite camp (many run half/full board)
  • DinnerIncluded · Fresh fish or tagine at your lagoon lodge

Where you sleep

A lagoon-side kite camp or eco-lodge on the peninsula

Resort · Dakhla Lagoon · $$

Travel note · The Atlantic here is cool despite the desert sun - a shorty or 3/2 wetsuit keeps you comfortable through long sessions. Book flights early; seats to Dakhla are limited.

Day 2: Speed Spot, Downwinder & the White Dune — Dakhla Lagoon
Dakhla Lagoon

Day 2

Speed Spot, Downwinder & the White Dune

Dakhla Lagoon · 40 km · Local lagoon transfers and downwinder shuttle drive

Today you make the most of the wind and the tides. After a morning session near the lagoon's celebrated Speed Spot - flat, gusty-free water that records-chasers love - ride a guided downwinder along the shoreline. Time it with the falling tide and you can reach the White Dune (Dune Blanche), a brilliant crescent of pale sand that rises from the lagoon and is only accessible across the exposed sandflats at low water. It is the classic Dakhla day: kite, picnic and pure desert-meets-ocean scenery.

Morning

2-3 hours

Speed Spot Session

Head to the flat-water stretch near the Speed Spot, famous for some of the smoothest, fastest conditions anywhere. With knee-to-waist-deep water and steady wind, it is ideal for building speed, nailing transitions and progressing quickly under your coach's eye.

Afternoon

3-4 hours

Lagoon Downwinder & White Dune

Ride a guided downwinder along the lagoon with a support vehicle, finishing near the White Dune. At low tide, walk out across the sandflats to the foot of the dazzling white crescent for photos and a picnic, with the lagoon shimmering on every side.

Evening

2-3 hours

Oyster Tasting & Camp Dinner

The Dakhla lagoon is famous for its oyster farms, fed by clean Atlantic water. Taste a plate freshly shucked before a relaxed camp dinner, then stargaze - with almost no light pollution, the Saharan night sky is extraordinary.

Meals

  • BreakfastIncluded · At your kite camp
  • LunchLocal eatery · Picnic by the White Dune (arranged by your camp)
  • DinnerIncluded · Fresh oysters and seafood at the lodge

Where you sleep

Same lagoon-side kite camp as Day 1

Resort · Dakhla Lagoon · $$

Travel note · Reaching the White Dune depends on the tide - your camp will plan the day around low water. Carry water and sun protection; shade is scarce on the sandflats.

Day 3: Desert, Dragon Island & Departure — Dakhla
Dakhla

Day 3

Desert, Dragon Island & Departure

Dakhla · 50 km · Approx. 45 minutes lagoon to airport plus excursion drive

On your final morning, ride one last session or explore beyond the lagoon. A short excursion takes in Dragon Island and the wild Atlantic side of the peninsula, where dunes tumble straight into the surf and flamingos pick through the shallows. After a final lunch you transfer back to the airport for your flight north. Dakhla rewards travellers who slow down: between sessions, it is as much about the silence, the light and the strange beauty of the Sahara meeting the sea as it is about the wind.

Morning

3 hours

Final Session or Desert Excursion

Choose a last kite session on the lagoon or a 4x4 excursion to Dragon Island and the ocean-facing dunes and cliffs. Look for flamingos and migratory birds in the shallows, and feel the contrast between the calm lagoon and the pounding Atlantic surf.

Afternoon

Flexible

Farewell Lunch & Airport Transfer

Enjoy a final seafood lunch at the camp or in Dakhla town, then transfer back to Dakhla airport for your departure flight. Allow buffer time, as flight schedules to and from the south are limited.

Evening

Departure

Fly out of Dakhla with sand still in your kit bag. End of your 3-day Saharan kitesurf escape, or extend with extra days to chase more wind on the lagoon.

Meals

  • BreakfastIncluded · At your kite camp

3-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

How many days do you need in Dakhla?

Because Dakhla is remote and reached by air, most kitesurfers stay at least 3 to 7 days to make the long journey worthwhile. Three days gives you two or three solid sessions plus time for the White Dune, a downwinder and a desert excursion. Dedicated kiters often book a week to take full advantage of the near-constant wind.

Why is Dakhla so good for kitesurfing?

Dakhla's lagoon offers flat, shallow, warm water where you can stand up between runs, plus steady thermal trade winds that blow on around 300 days a year. That combination makes it ideal for beginners learning safely and for freestyle and racing riders chasing speed at spots like the Speed Spot. It is regarded as one of the best flat-water kite destinations in the world.

When is the best time to kitesurf in Dakhla?

Dakhla is windy almost year-round, but the most consistent and strongest winds run from roughly April to September, peaking in summer. Spring and early autumn still offer reliable wind with slightly milder conditions. Even in winter the lagoon sees plenty of kiteable days, making it a popular escape when European spots go cold.

How do you get to Dakhla?

Almost everyone arrives by air. Royal Air Maroc and other carriers fly to Dakhla airport from Casablanca (about 2.5 hours), with connections via Agadir and seasonal international charters. Driving from northern Morocco is possible but very long - well over 1,000km and 20-plus hours - so flying is by far the most practical option.

Is Dakhla good for beginner kiteboarders?

Yes, it is one of the best places to learn. The lagoon's waist-deep, flat water means you can stand up if you lose your board, and the wind is steady and predictable. Numerous schools offer IKO-certified lessons, gear hire and rescue boats, so complete beginners can progress quickly and safely alongside advanced riders.

What is the White Dune in Dakhla?

The White Dune (Dune Blanche) is a striking crescent of pale sand that rises from the Dakhla lagoon. At low tide you can walk across the exposed sandflats to reach it, and it is a favourite destination for downwinders and picnics. Surrounded by shimmering water on most sides, it is one of Dakhla's most photographed natural landmarks.

What else is there to do in Dakhla besides kitesurfing?

Beyond the lagoon you can tour the oyster farms and taste fresh oysters, spot flamingos and migratory birds in the shallows, take a 4x4 trip to Dragon Island and the ocean-facing dunes, surf the Atlantic side, relax in natural hot springs, and simply soak up the vast desert silence and star-filled skies.

Is the water warm in Dakhla?

Despite the desert setting, the Atlantic-fed lagoon is cooler than you might expect, so most riders wear a shorty or 3/2mm wetsuit, especially for long sessions and windy afternoons. In the warmest months some kite in boardshorts and a rash vest, but a wetsuit keeps you comfortable and protects against sun, wind and salt.

What is the Dakhla lagoon like?

The Dakhla lagoon is a large, shallow body of water stretching along the peninsula, separated from the open Atlantic by a thin spit of land. Its flat, warm, knee-to-waist-deep water and consistent wind create near-perfect kitesurfing conditions, while the tides expose sandflats that lead to features like the White Dune.

Is Dakhla safe for tourists?

Dakhla is a well-established watersports destination and is generally calm and welcoming, with a strong community of kite camps. It lies in Morocco's far south, so it is sensible to check current travel advice before you go, carry your passport for occasional checkpoints on the peninsula road, and book through reputable camps and operators.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • The lagoon's flat, shallow water is ideal for beginners and freestyle progression alike.
  • Wind blows on roughly 300 days a year, but April to September is the most consistent.
  • Plan White Dune and downwinder days around the tides - your camp will advise.
  • Wear a shorty or 3/2 wetsuit; the Atlantic stays cool under the desert sun.
  • Book flights and beds early - Dakhla is remote and seats and rooms are limited.
  • Half- or full-board packages are convenient, as restaurants are spread along the peninsula.
  • Bring cash; card payments can be unreliable in the camps and town.
  • Protect your skin and lips - sun, wind and salt are relentless out on the water.

Packing list

What to pack

  • A shorty or 3/2mm wetsuit (camps also hire gear)
  • Boardshorts, rash vest and a quick-dry towel
  • High-factor reef-safe sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses
  • A buff or scarf against wind-blown sand
  • A warm layer for cool desert evenings
  • A reusable water bottle and electrolytes
  • A dry bag for valuables and your phone
  • Sandals plus closed shoes for desert excursions
  • A power bank and travel adapter (Type C/E)
  • Cash in dirhams for camps, tips and town
