Day 1
Alpine Ifrane, the Lion & Al Akhawayn
Ifrane
Ifrane is unlike anywhere else in Morocco. Built by the French in 1928 as a hill station and perched at around 1,665m in the Middle Atlas, it has tidy parks, pitched red roofs and clean alpine air that earn it the nickname "Switzerland of Morocco." Your first day is a slow exploration of the town - its famous carved stone lion, the leafy boulevards and lakes, and the elegant campus of Al Akhawayn University - followed by a short walk to the Cascades des Vierges waterfall just outside the centre.
Morning
2 hoursTown Walk & the Lion of Ifrane
Stroll Ifrane's manicured streets and gardens to the carved stone Lion of Ifrane, the town's emblem said to commemorate the last Atlas lion in the region, then admire the Swiss-style chalets, the central park and the small artificial lakes that give the town its alpine feel.
Afternoon
3 hoursAl Akhawayn University & Cascades des Vierges
Visit the grand, green-lawned campus of Al Akhawayn University, opened in 1995, then walk or drive to the Cascades des Vierges (Waterfall of the Virgins) on the edge of town, a pretty cascade reached by a wooded path - a favourite local picnic spot.
Evening
2 hoursCosy Mountain Dinner
As the temperature drops in the thin mountain air, settle into a town restaurant for hearty Middle Atlas cooking - a steaming tagine or harira soup - and enjoy the rare experience of a crisp, fresh evening in Morocco.
