Overview

2 days, M'Hamid to Erg Chigaga

This 2-day M'Hamid itinerary heads for Erg Chigaga, the wildest of Morocco's accessible dune fields, reached only by a roughly two-hour 4x4 piste from the frontier village of M'Hamid el Ghizlane - the end of the tarmac on the Draa. Day one crosses open hammada, dry lakebeds and a nomad well to the towering dunes, with a sunset camel trek to a remote camp; day two brings a sunrise over a near-empty sand sea and the return crossing. Stretching some 40km and far less visited than Merzouga's Erg Chebbi, Erg Chigaga rewards the extra effort with genuine solitude and the Sahara at its most untamed.

Suitability

Is this 2-day Morocco itinerary right for you?

This route is designed around a balanced pace that pairs full days of sightseeing with genuine downtime to wander on your own. Expect some early starts, a few longer drives and a fair amount of walking on uneven medina lanes and dunes — a reasonable level of fitness helps. It works best for groups of 1–12 (we find 2 is the sweet spot), and because every departure is private we can stretch or compress it to fit your dates.

  • You have 2 days and want to see M'Hamid, Erg Chigaga
  • You want a route shaped by people who run it on the ground, not a generic template
  • You are happy to trade a few longer drives for bucket-list landscapes

Day 1: Across the Piste to the Erg Chigaga Dunes — M'Hamid
M'Hamid

Day 1

Across the Piste to the Erg Chigaga Dunes

M'Hamid

M'Hamid el Ghizlane is where the tarmac ends and the true desert begins - the last village on the Draa, beyond which there is only sand and sky. After a mint tea in town you swap onto a desert piste, and a roughly two-hour 4x4 crossing carries you over open hammada, dry lakebeds, acacia flats and a nomad well to the great dunes of Erg Chigaga. Far larger and remoter than the dunes at Zagora or Merzouga, Chigaga stretches some 40 kilometres and sees a fraction of the visitors. In the late afternoon you ride camels up into the sand for sunset, then settle into a remote camp for a Berber dinner and music under an immense desert sky.

Morning

1-2 hours

Arrival in M'Hamid & Desert Briefing

Reach M'Hamid el Ghizlane, the frontier village at the end of the sealed road, for a welcome mint tea and a briefing before transferring to the 4x4 for the desert crossing.

Afternoon

4-5 hours

4x4 Piste to Erg Chigaga & Sunset Trek

Cross roughly two hours of desert piste - hammada, dry lakebeds and a nomad well - to reach Erg Chigaga, then ride camels into the towering dunes for a remote, crowd-free sunset on the way to camp.

Evening

3 hours

Berber Dinner & Nomad Music

Dine on tagine at your isolated camp deep in Erg Chigaga, then enjoy desert music and tea around the fire under one of the darkest, starriest skies in Morocco.

Travel note · The piste to Erg Chigaga needs a proper 4x4 and an experienced driver - there is no sealed road. Bring only an overnight bag and secure loose items; the desert track is bumpy.

Day 2: Chigaga Sunrise & the Return Crossing — M'Hamid
M'Hamid

Day 2

Chigaga Sunrise & the Return Crossing

M'Hamid

Erg Chigaga at sunrise is the reward for the effort of getting here: a vast, silent sand sea turning gold as the sun climbs, with rarely another soul in sight. After breakfast you can climb a high dune, walk into the sand or simply soak up the stillness before the 4x4 carries you back across the piste toward M'Hamid, with stops at an oasis and perhaps a nomad encampment along the way. Back in the village you freshen up over a final mint tea before your onward transfer. Wilder and more remote than Morocco's other desert gateways, M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga deliver the Sahara at its most untamed.

Morning

2-3 hours

Sunrise over Erg Chigaga

Greet the dawn over the vast Erg Chigaga dunes, with a guided dune walk or a final camel ride while the sand glows, followed by a relaxed breakfast as the camp wakes around you.

Afternoon

3 hours

Return 4x4 Crossing & Oasis Stop

Recross the desert piste by 4x4 toward M'Hamid, stopping at an oasis and, conditions permitting, a nomad camp or well, before reaching the village and freshening up over mint tea.

Evening

Flexible

Onward Departure

Begin your private transfer onward up the Draa Valley toward Zagora, Ouarzazate and Marrakech, completing your two-day Erg Chigaga expedition.

2-day Morocco itinerary FAQs

Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga - what is the difference?

Erg Chebbi, at Merzouga, is the more accessible dune field, reached straight from a sealed road and rising to about 150 metres. Erg Chigaga, near M'Hamid, is larger - around 40km long - and far wilder, but it requires a roughly two-hour 4x4 piste to reach. Choose Erg Chebbi for convenience and iconic dunes, Erg Chigaga for remoteness, scale and solitude.

How do you get to Erg Chigaga from M'Hamid?

There is no paved road. From M'Hamid el Ghizlane you transfer to a 4x4 and cross about two hours of desert piste - hammada, dry lakebeds and acacia plains - to reach the dunes. An experienced desert driver is essential, which is why Erg Chigaga sees far fewer visitors than roadside deserts like Zagora.

Is M'Hamid or Merzouga better for the Sahara?

Merzouga is easier to reach and has more nearby attractions, while M'Hamid offers a remoter, more adventurous experience at the bigger Erg Chigaga dunes. If you want big dunes with minimal hassle, choose Merzouga; if you want wilder, emptier desert and don't mind a rough 4x4 crossing, M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga are the better pick.

How far is M'Hamid from Marrakech?

M'Hamid is about 450km from Marrakech, a long drive of roughly 8-9 hours via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, Agdz and Zagora - it is the last village before the open Sahara. This standalone itinerary assumes you have already reached M'Hamid and focuses on the Erg Chigaga expedition itself.

Is the Erg Chigaga desert camp luxury?

Camps at Erg Chigaga range from simple nomad-style bivouacs to comfortable tented camps with private tents and proper beds, though they are inherently more remote and rugged given the 4x4 access. All include a Berber dinner, breakfast and campfire; for the most isolated, off-grid Sahara nights, Erg Chigaga is hard to beat.

What is the best time of year for Erg Chigaga?

October to December and March to May are best, with warm days and cool nights ideal for camping and the piste crossing. Summer brings extreme heat often above 45C, and deep-winter nights can be very cold. Spring and autumn give the most comfortable conditions for this remote desert.

Is the M'Hamid trip suitable for everyone?

It is rated moderate rather than easy because of the bumpy two-hour 4x4 piste and the remote, basic facilities. It suits travellers comfortable with rough roads and simple camps who want a genuine wilderness experience. Those who prefer easy roadside access and more comfort may find Merzouga or even Zagora a better fit.

What is M'Hamid el Ghizlane like?

M'Hamid is a small frontier village at the very end of the Draa Valley road, surrounded by palm groves and open desert. It is the launch point for Erg Chigaga and Erg Lehoudi, hosts a nomad-culture music festival, and has a handful of auberges and a modest souk - a quiet, end-of-the-road outpost rather than a tourist town.

Insider tips

Before you go

  • Erg Chigaga is the remote alternative to Merzouga - quieter but harder to reach
  • You must cross a 4x4 piste; this is not a roadside desert like Zagora
  • October to December and March to May offer the best desert weather
  • Choose an operator with reliable 4x4s and experienced desert drivers
  • Bring more cash than usual - M'Hamid has very limited facilities
  • Secure cameras and loose gear for the bumpy piste crossing
  • Pack a warm layer; nights deep in Chigaga get genuinely cold
  • Allow buffer time for the long return drive up the Draa Valley

Packing list

What to pack

  • A warm fleece or jacket for cold desert nights
  • A scarf or shesh against sand on the open piste
  • Closed walking shoes and sandals for the dunes
  • Sunglasses, strong sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat
  • A head-torch for the remote, unlit camp
  • A small, soft overnight bag for the 4x4 crossing
  • A refillable water bottle and lip balm for the dry air
  • A power bank - there is little electricity at camp
  • Cash in small notes for tips and the village
  • Wet wipes and hand sanitiser for the remote camp
