Camel riders crossing orange Sahara dunes A Friday-night New Year
New Year’s Eve 2027 is a Friday and 1 January 2028 is a Saturday and a Moroccan public holiday. With Christmas on a Saturday too, many travellers take the full week from 25 December, which concentrates demand.

Christmas to New Year is the busiest fortnight for visitors. Desert camps in Erg Chebbi and small Marrakech riads, many with only a handful of rooms, are the first places to book out.

Bring a warm jacket, a hat and layers for the Sahara: nights can be near freezing even when the day was warm. Camps provide heavy blankets.
Book the night first
Choose where you want to be on 31 December, then we build the days around it. The desert camp or riad for that night is the hardest place to secure.
Alcohol and celebrations
Morocco is a Muslim country. Many hotels and some riads and camps serve alcohol and mark the night; others do not. Tell us what you want and we check before we book.
