What to know
What Eid al-Adha 2027 means for a traveller

The ksar of Ait Benhaddou above its palms A family holiday first
Eid al-Adha commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son. Families gather at home, many travelling across the country to be together. The official holiday is two days, and many businesses close for longer.

In most years sheep markets open on the edges of towns and villages, and you will see sheep in cars, on rooftops and in courtyards. Buses, trains and roads fill up from three or four days before Eid; in 2025 the sacrifice was suspended because of drought, and it returned in 2026.

A panorama of Tinghir and its palm oasis Souks and workshops close
On Eid and for one or two days after, most souk stalls, artisan workshops, small restaurants and many offices close. Medinas feel empty, so it is the wrong week for shopping or a craft visit.

Hotels, riads, desert camps and big monuments stay open, though riads may run with a smaller team. A drive through the valleys, a desert night or a pool day works well.

Dates to know in 2027
The 2027 dates that shape this trip
“About” means the date depends on the moon; “usually” means the 2027 dates are not announced yet. We confirm both in your proposal.
Good to know
Experiencing Eid respectfully
Book transport early
Trains and long-distance buses sell out before Eid. A private driver avoids that, but we still move long drives away from the two busiest travel days.
Do not photograph the sacrifice
The sacrifice takes place at home on the morning of Eid. Ask before any photo of people or animals, and accept a no with good grace.
Greet people warmly
“Eid mubarak” (blessed Eid) is welcome on the day. If a host offers tea or food, accepting a little is a kind gesture.
Carry some cash
With banks and many shops closed, cash machines can run low in small towns. Take what you need before the holiday.

Eid al-Adha 2027: your questions
When is Eid al-Adha 2027 in Morocco?
Eid al-Adha 2027 is expected about 16 May. The exact date follows the moon sighting in Morocco and can move by a day; we confirm it in your proposal.
What closes during Eid al-Adha in Morocco?
Most souks, artisan workshops, small restaurants, banks and offices close for two or three days. Hotels, riads, desert camps and the main monuments stay open.
Is Eid al-Adha a bad time to travel in Morocco?
Not if you plan for it. Roads, trains and buses are very busy in the days before and after, and medinas are quiet on Eid. Spend those days in the desert, the mountains or by the sea.
What is Eid al-Kabir?
Eid al-Kabir, “the great Eid”, is the Moroccan name for Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice. Families share a sheep, pray in the morning and spend the following days visiting relatives.
Can visitors join Eid al-Adha celebrations?
Eid is a private family occasion. You may be invited for tea or a meal by a host; accept warmly, dress modestly and do not photograph the sacrifice.
Is May 2027 a good month to visit Morocco?
Yes. May is warm and green, with roses in the Dades valley and snow still on the Atlas. Just keep the Eid al-Adha week, about 16 May, light on cities and shopping.
